This is the first,
Following many firsts,
A plethora
Of first pages
Of new books.
Not the first book,
But this first page
Bearing the first words
In the first free verse
I pencil in—
My graphite emotions
Bleed in scratchings
Grayed out
In a line up of raw,
Unfiltered,
Fucking fears
Forever fragmenting
My focus.
My anxieties not a first,
But for the first time
I am not just feeling my own,
But an entire world’s around
Me.
Why did I have daughters?
A first-time question
For me.
Was that selfish—
Selfish to create beauty,
Love, hope, and individuality—
To bring them into
An orange troll’s world
Where they’re viewed
As less
Than
Men?
Toupée totalitarians
Topple the truth
While the lemmings
Fall off
The liar’s cliff.
Sadly,
That is not
A first.

- Comment from author about the poem: The first poem starting on the first blank page of my new poetry notebook. I am excited about the new book, not so much about the times.

The digital word processor saved me! Actual physical pages always challenge me to first time perfection, to write only when I was at the point of a near polished draft, never earlier than that. Your success and situation is enviable!
I have, too found the word processor, but there is something about scratching my words into a notebook with a pencil. I remember writing in notebooks as a teen on my bed in my bedroom. So, I aways get excited when I start a new notebook, which Ion iously just did. That said, I donβt always handwrite my poems, but I do so a lot!. Thank you so much for reading and commenting, friend! πβ€οΈ
Agreed! And there is also a whole worldβs difference using an ink-ribbon, manual typewriter, fountain pen (quill), calligraphy nibs and styluses (styli). I also use/d mechanical pencils and technical drawing pens; carried around a tickler notebook thatβs roughly the size of a palm.
Yes. For sure! I typically use No. 2 Ticonderogas and composition and/or journal notebooks, but have been known to carry around mechanical pencils as well. Almost always with pencils unless necessity dictates! LOL!
This would appear crammed with truths that I am not afraid to admit I share .. π
Hear hear! Thank you so much for reading and sharing your thoughts. Much appreciated as always! πβ€οΈ
