Tune: Helmsley
('Lo, he comes with clouds descending')
Luke 3 v.7-18
**********
John the Baptist at the Jordan
Preached the coming of God's Son
Said to people wanting baptism
Repent, and believe in Him
So be ready, so be ready, so be ready
Kingdom of heaven comes, see
He said, You vipers, who warned you
To flee from wrath to come true?
Bring forth therefore fruits good, worthy
Of repentance, humble be
Living, showing; living, showing; living, showing
Good deeds, words, in every thing
Every tree which bears fruit not good
Shall be hewn down from the wood
And be cast into the fire sure
Be consumed, and be no more
Axe laid to root, axe laid to root, axe laid to root
Of trees, removed trunk, branch, shoot
John did say he not the Christ be
But that He would come soon, see
Greater than John, fan in His hand
To winnow people of land
Wheat be gathered, wheat be gathered, wheat be gathered
But the chaff burned, be assured

- Comment from author about the poem: A hymn-poem in 8.7.8.7.12.7. It's scary to be greeted with 'you vipers/poisonous snakes'. Yet John says it will be 'worse' for the unrepentant when Christ comes, and those who may end up as chaff. The hymn in the clip has the original words. There are some clips with some altered words to some verses, though in this case they don't spoil the original hymn.

I am not a religious person but i do read your listings and find it interesting the way they are laid out, i enjoyed reading this one, thank you
Thanks T.
You are very welcome
Even though John has extrasensory perception, he is not the savior, so he is telling us to prepare and wait.
Thanks rin. I would say he does not have ESP but is a prophet.
Another hymn of warning. Being rebellious I don't like warnings much but the hymn was beautifully written and it is nice to read your hymns again. The music was most beautiful.
Thanks T. Yes, imagine hearing a sermon/talk starting 'You snakes; why are you here? who told you to flee from the coming wrath of God?'
Loved your posted music Orchi. Most uplifting and filled with light. Your own spiritual offering a shade darker. Happy Wednesday.
Thanks C. Yes, fiery words from John the Baptist.
Wonderful hymn Orchi, and spot in theologically too. And, counter to the way some judgmental Christians can take these warnings, they are largely directed AT God’s people…in our context…us Christians.Of course, the whole world world needs repentance too, but this warning is specifically to believers in God to make room for the coming Messiah (in our context…the secind coming), who comes to save the world. The warning stands true and, thank God for Jesus who John prepared the way for! Anyway, another wonderful Advent hymn calling us to repent and prepare the way! Amen my brother. 🙏🌹👏
Thanks T. Yes, and the religious leaders of those days got called hypocrites by Jesus - but not all of them surely, nor all of them today.
Correct. Not all of them then...not all of them today. Ah. Humans. We don't change even as time does! LOL!
And...Oh yes Jesus did! He was a saucy one! Many people forget, or never learned, that about Him. LOL!
When some of them just bumble on, it makes people believe the joke - 'Oh well, church leaders only work one day a week anyway - Sundays!'
Hahaha! For sure!
Always heart felt Orchiee
Thanks GS.
Like I said, you appear to be on a role but you could easily be on a roll .. perhaps .. 🐧🐭
Thanks N. Can ya beat a roll, like ya can beat an egg? I'm talking rubbish now. lol.
