Rotterdam

arqios

Red train rested at Rotterdam station
Over the border to meet a friend
Trains all over Europe pass here
Today is a bright and sunny day
Every person glows in its brightness
Realising not a former disaster, that
During the 40's destruction erupted
Along these very streets, evacuated

Murderous bombs wreaking havoc

  • Comment from author about the poem: 14th of May, 1940, the Luftwaffe decimated Rotterdam, Netherlands, killing 210 soldiers and 940 civilians. Visited a friend in Rotterdam in 1995. It was a wonderful time. Unbeknownst to me at that time, this historical, tragic memory behind bright veneer.

It is the metaphor that I took from this poem that gets the fave my friend. How easily we forget the past, which in many instances is so healthy but can also if we do not remember how can we learn from it. Cosmetics on any face make it more attractive but also hide what lies beneath. Well written Cryptic

And we repurpose our milieu mindlessly over the graves of those we truly love. Perhaps that’s the definition of moving Olin in its purest form 🙏🏻🕊️

arqios, this carries a quiet weight…that contrast between the bright day and the memory of what once happened on those same streets. It feels like standing in a place where history still breathes beneath ordinary life. The ending lands with a sobering reminder. Powerful piece, my friend. 🌹🖤🙏🕯️🐦‍⬛

Always worth knowing the History of a place .
I suppose some scars are well hidden.

We can look back and se so many awful things that have happened Rik, we can but hope that it will all stop happening.
