the lighthouse keeper’s watch

arqios

Notice of absence from arqios
A reminder to extend an olive branch… where possible.
Let us sup of the dignity of kindness and humility…

On a rugged cliff
the lighthouse stands
a beacon of hope in the storm
its light cutting through the darkness
guiding ships to safer waters.

The keeper tends the flame with care
a solitary watch in the night
his only companions the stars above
and the crashing waves below.

In the stillness
he listens to the sea
its endless whispering of secrets
a timeless conversation with the shore
a dance of light and shadow.

  • Comment from author about the poem: A well received poem that I hope will do well here as well. Perhaps it will! Arising from a chat with Kevin (Hulme) about lighthouses and dragons 🐉 (my contribution to the convo)… tendrils wafting in a wintered hearth… part inspired by Minots Ledge lighthouse (see image)

To Keep The Lighthouse Keeper Company

    • arqios

Nice one! I imagine it would get lonely all by your lonesome for extended periods of time. Thanks for being the first comment RC 🙏🏻👍🕊️ You are much appreciated.

Thanks DWa, there should be more in this expanse of a topic for all to feast on 👍🕊️

      • sorenbarrett

The poem resonates with me because I from time to time live on that rocky shore within a stones throw of a lighthouse and I hear those wave meet the shore. The metaphor is iconic as well and like the waves keeps coming back. Very nicely written

        • arqios

Glad to have simulated a good memory there. Always love your getting the metaphors! That is so brilliant 🕊️👍 Thank you so much Soren 🙏🏻

A calm thinking head in very stormy waters, need more of the. Enjoyed the read

              • arqios

That is so true, important to have calm thinking both of those on board and those on land manning the lighthouse! Wonderful insight there. Thank you ever so kindly 🙏🏻🕊️👍

Love lighthouses. Also loved the Robert Eggers' film The Lighthouse. But that is neither here nor there. This is a wonderful poem, my friend. Well done! 🌹👏

Thanks Tristan 🙏🏻🕊 but that last line is bugging me still… might have to change that when it comes to me… 👍🏻

There has always been something most intriguing about the lighthouse and how they keep the shore from the ships and vice versa and how in great storms the lighthouse is the hero in the storm. 🌹

                            • arqios

Loving that heroic image, immobile as trees are but just as important! Thanks Teddy 👍🏻🙏🏻🕊

Yes nice One. It must have been a Solitary life for these people, but a important one.
When I was a Kid I always wanted to live in a Lighthouse, don’t know why. ( Calling Dr Freud, Patient to see you).
                                  A good write.

                                  • arqios

Ah, join the queue! I was also one with that there notion- perhaps brought on (I imagine by Puff the magic dragon 🐉) recently rewatched and realised there could be a link there, dragons and Arthurian lore being top-tier childhood obsessions… perhaps! Thanks kindly for this quite engaging interaction. You are much appreciated 🙏🏻👍🏻🕊

Growing up in a town with two lighthouses in it, I have a special appreciation for this poem of yours arqios. 😊👍

Oh nice! What an excellent pair of twin landmarks ⛴💡🏠

Scituate, Massachusetts had two lighthouses of Minot Light a mile off shore, and Scituate Light in Scituate Harbor. Minot Light is known as the I LOVE YOU light because of it's 1-4-3 light flashing sequence.

                                        • arqios

Cool! Scituate sounds like situate, sizzling sibilance! Music to the ears and flashing love from its strobing. Part of the inspiration was actually Minots Ledge from photos I’ve seen of it growing up. The air that some of waves are quite terrifying even from afar. 🙏🏻👍🏻🕊

Yes, that's how it sounds, the c is silent.
