Tune: Breslau
('Take up they cross, the Saviour said')
Matthew 4 v.1-11
*********
Jesus led to the wilderness
For forty days and nights no less
To be tempted of the devil
Though He did overcome them all
Fasted those forty days and nights
Was hungry, there no food in sight
Tempted to turn stones int obread
Satisfy hunger, so be fed
But He said, Man, he shall not live
By bread alone, what earth does give
But lives by every word that sure
Proceeds from the mouth of God sure
Tempted to throw self from Temple
Promise, angels would guard Him all
But He said, You shall not the Lord
Your God tempt, nor misuse His word
Tempted to bow down to devil
Who would give Him earth's kingdoms all
If he would bow and so worship
Give allegiance in deed and lip* (*in words)
But Jesus said, Get you hence, you
Satan, you shall worship, 'tis true
The Lord your God, and Him only
Shall you serve, none other but He
Then the devil he did Him leave
No temptations did Him deceive
And angels came, to Him did tend
Jesus, who o'ercame to the end

- Comment from author about the poem: A hymn-poem in 8.8.8.8. We're not told if Jesus had water in those 40 days and nights. I should think He did, or otherwise it was some super-human feat. Many with hunger need 'bread' today - meeting of human needs first, even though spiritual needs are more important.

Thank you A.
You’re welcome O
A hymn of restraint and a parable for all to stay true to what they believe despite the most dire temptations. Good one Orchi

Thank you S.
There are temptations all around us. What have you given up for lent Orchi. I have given up chocolate but not red vino. I can’t function without a glass every now and then. Enjoyed reading your hymn. Happy Sunday.
Thank you C. I gave up being nice to KP. But then again, I never started being nice to her. lol.
We might fall into temptation, but is there more chance that will we fall into a pothole?! Behave, says Fido to me. lol.
