Poetry isn't for me

Tom Dylan

Notice of absence from Tom Dylan
Sorry if there is a delay in responses. Sometimes life gets in the way. As John Lennon said, life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans.

Poetry isn’t for me

because I’m working class

because I never went to university

because I like dining on

kebabs in their wrappers

and drinking beer from the tin

but then I see the pinks

and pale blues

of the morning skies

and that spring is on the way

and I feel that

poetry is for me

because I live

I breathe

I feel

I exist.

Poetry is for everyone Tom, and you are clearly a poet. Your second and third stanzas tell me so. Have a lovely day.

Poetry, in truth, is for everyone who wants it! I am proudly working class myself, and never went to uni, but I have a love of the English language and its expressive possibilities. I write more songs than poems, but poetry and music often overlap anyway! I can truly relate to this poem of yours!

          • Tom Dylan

Thanks so much for your comments. Really appreciated. I am glad you agree. I write stories and poems, and the overlap is similar to what you describe. Cheers, Tom.

And I see from your bio you play the ukulele too! Good to hear from a fellow uke player! 🙂

              • Distant View

Yes, l play uke! My main instrument is guitar, but I bought a ukulele several years ago and enjoy playing it!

                • Tom Dylan

Excellent, good to hear. I am the opposite. I play the guitar occasionally but mostly the ukulele.

Yes, poetry IS "for you," and you ARE a poet because it chose you, as Samuel Daniels explained too many centuries earlier so eloquently. Whence you are only flavours your lines to perfection, and "art" reclaims her son. Beautifully rendered with excellent imagery and a glorious poignancy. Thank you for sharing. I've missed you.

Bless you, Missy. Thanks so much for your comments. Really appreciated.

Yes , some people think you have to be part of the ‘Elite’ to do the ‘Arts’, go to University etc. Jack Vettriano was self taught and the Critics looked down on his work; but he was/is hugely popular. And Lennon and McCartney couldn’t ‘Read’ Music, But wrote some of THE most famous songs. A fine Poem.

Thanks a lot for your comments, Kevin. Yes, that is exactly it. Some poetry goes way over my head with allusions to Greek mythology etc, but I keep coming back because some poetry really hits deep. And as a massive Beatles fan, love the Lennon and McCartney reference. Thanks again, mate.
