reading

lunarchloedip

he closes his eyes
while i open the book
and he stays quiet
as i read
this
time i really am being heard
these aren't just lost words
he's listening
finally, someone is listening
and i want to praise God
for letting me have this moment
i never want it to be over
i read until my voice is sore
every few days, he asks for more
and i cannot help but oblige

he listens to me
and i want to kiss him
but i don't
because that would interrupt the story
he tells me
i am healing his inner child

The little boy within
who just needed someone to see him
to read to him
he does not know
he is healing me too
the little girl who just needed to be listened to
every word I wrote
that never saw daylight
every time I had to ask
to be treated right
in this moment
she is content

so i put the book down
kiss his palms
his cheeks
until they flush
i think this is more than a crush
when i pull back and take in his face
feel the warmth of his embrace
he turns to meet my gaze
and smiles because he caught me staring
but i am past the point of caring
he pulls me in
thanks me for reading
nothing can come close to this feeling
i can barely believe
that i'm not dreaming
and when it all gets too much
when my eyes start streaming
he wipes them dry

i think this is the point of being alive.

What a beautiful poem of caring and understanding. Lovely rhyme as well that helps the story to tell.

Wow! You have, in script, portrayed a profound truth. One of the best I have read.
