Almost Free

Kaelyn Jade

I lived my whole life with peace,

Surrounded by people sworn to be kind,

Raised as if I was also one of them,

But I never belonged.

I could be kind yes,

But it never came as easy as others,

I had it in me,

But I was more than others could see.

When I chose,

I chose what I thought would make me free,

I didn’t know when I chose,

That free is not something I could be.

There were moments I could almost see it,

At the tip of my fingers,

Like the wind rushing past me,

But I never could grasp it,

I never could get it to stay.

But I will say,

I wouldn’t have done it any different,

Through my struggles,

The pain I’ve been through,

I had you.

We did it together,

You went from a trusted worker,

To flying in the breeze with me,

You were finding freedom in me.

Sure our freedom never was really true,

We were still hunted,

We were still too different to be loved,

But it felt the same.

I could feel it with you.

So now that I’m gone,

Now that I left you,

I want you to know,

That I was never meant to be free,

Because I was meant to set everyone else free.

So be free,

And live your life,

Don’t forget me,

But don’t let me hold you back,

Because you are free.

  • Comment from author about the poem: This poem is based off of divergent. I kinda thought of what tris would say to four if she could. {SPOILER} If you haven't read the books yes I know she didn't die in the movie but she did in the books so.

A very nice write of what it is like to belong and yet not. A search for identity and one's home. Lovely
