Scars Like Fathers

Tristan Robert Lange

Masochistic memories memorialized
Around sadistic school boys
Serving up sanitation pads
To the locker room losers,
The boys with the smallest tally hoes;
Like “little Joe”,
So small they said he’d have to
“Pay a ho just to get a blow.”
Or, there’s Bobby “Spits”,
Who couldn’t get it up
Before the spritz.
Sadly, there was “Tommy Ton”,
Whom they’d always shun;
That shit ended—BANG—
With the sound of a gun.
Yeah—no fun,
But at least the boys got by,
Grew up—
Real mature guys.
Mikey, Billy, Chad:
They weren’t all that bad.
At least they all seem glad,
That, like their dads,
Their kids fit right in,
Being raised in the shadows
Of their fathers’ sins.

There has always been bullying, some it destroys others it makes stronger. I was the subject until I fought and then the bully became a friend that often came to me for help. Even animals bully, look at chickens. Evolution at work. This poem was a sad reminder of the consequences of some of this behavior. A rather raw write of this in childhood. So well written it leaves memories of the past.

        • Tristan Robert Lange

Indeed. Another example of how cold and apathetic the third rock from the sun, let alone the vast universe is. Thank you my friend for your time, your thoughts, and your support. Always appreciated. ๐Ÿงผ๐Ÿฉธ๐Ÿšช๐Ÿง

That's the point of having kids, right? Add to that, we never left the playground. Hollywood's most obvious tribute to that phenomenon was Romy and Michelle's Highschool Reunion....the bullies and losers facing up again where nothing's changed except our ages. Excellently rendered with superb imagery and a keenly haunting poignancy. Thank you for sharing, this meat wasn't tenderized sufficiently and is still too tough to chew.

          • Tristan Robert Lange

Tough to chew, indeed. And what a fantastic film reference. Love that movie. Indeed, a perfect reference for this poem! Much appreciated, my friend. ๐Ÿงผ๐Ÿฉธ๐Ÿšช๐Ÿง

Very sad and touching write of the continued cycle of bullying and it's ongoing consequences, although these days it is done more with the tongue and technology than the fist of the past it is as common. Brings sad reminders of younger days, nicely crafted and expressed

            • Tristan Robert Lange

Yes. The bullying only has gotten worse, really, due to the technology. So sad, indeed, my friend. Thank you so much for your thoughts and support. Always appreciated! ๐Ÿงผ๐Ÿฉธ๐Ÿšช๐Ÿง

Pity for the perpetrator is not something I usually feel. When raised that way, though, I don't know if there is any choice really. They may not know the consequences of their actions, not until the kid kills himself and instead of feeling bad they teach their sons to hate.

Me either. Exactly. And the cycle continues. You have gotten the heart of this, my friend. Your time and thoughts are appreciated! ๐Ÿงผ๐Ÿฉธ๐Ÿšช๐Ÿง

An intriguing way you have with words, captivating the reader with the bleak truth dressed down to a bare knuckled verse of bulling. Uniquely proffered with skill, honesty and insight. Excellent!

                              My kind regards to you,

                              Tony.

I very much like how this is written and how it is expressed that they only matured to be as bad as the adults that led them there. An excellent read!

                                • Tristan Robert Lange

Thank you Isabella! Much appreciated my friend. Sorry for the delayed response. I was both recovering from a bad back injury and a business conference at the same time! ๐Ÿ™„ Back and slowly getting better! Thanks again for your time, thoughts and support! ๐Ÿงผ๐Ÿฉธ๐Ÿšช๐Ÿง
