Springtime Silence

Tristan Robert Lange

Notice of absence from Tristan Robert Lange
Hey friends, just a quick heads-up—I’m traveling with family the next several days and won’t be on consistently. I’ll check in when I can, but responses may be delayed. Appreciate the patience and support. I’ll be back soon. In the meantime:

—Tristan 🌑🖋️🧠🛤️
A little one playing.
Warmth of spring rain falls
On baby groundhog.

Excitement exudes.
Baby Wesley walks care free,
The new grass spring’s fare.

A beautiful world
Beneath silver lining skies,
Bring a vernal hope.

Another enjoys
The same waking season’s rain.
Air brings the fresh scent
Of an infant’s excursion.
Its essence triggers instinct.

Wesley takes his last bite,
Before the dog takes its first;
It chomps down really tight.

There was no real chance for flight.
Wesley’s blood quenches the thirst
Of a dog with violent might.

O, the most horrible sight!
It is the absolute worst.
The dog chomps again real tight.

Her jaws grinding—no more fight—
She got to the rodent first.
The dog bites its final bite;

The bones crack—snap—Wesley’s plight.
His eyeballs pop—bloody burst—
Out dog’s mouth with violent might.

Wesley’s day turned night,
This month being just his first,
A final chomp—the most tight—
Groundhog spit out with cold might.

  • Comment from author about the poem: Form: Chameleon Cantos. This is the third poem written in my original form, which evolves from haiku to tanka to villanelle. I sadly witnessed this in real life—my own dog killed a baby groundhog. I wrote this to process the horror, the heartbreak, and the fragile beauty of spring that gave way to blood. The woodchuck family had two babies—I’ve named them Wesley and Wilhelmina. I’m not sure which one Chloe got, but this is for the one we lost.

This has happened with my dog that used to root up moles and bring them to me and once he killed a racoon. My cat would bring in birds and baby rabbits. Sad but it is nature. Loved the poem Tristan

Indeed. Very sad, but is what it is. Thank you, my friend. Your time, words, and understanding are much appreciated! 🌦️🦔💔🧠

Tricky to 'like' this in a way, if you see what I mean, erm, Obi, erm Tristan! 🙂

      • Tristan Robert Lange

Yeah. Kinda of tricky, isn't it? Now, if it were a Wookie, that my dog would have been legless. You know the rule, "Let the Wookie win". 🤣🤣

      • Muse of Calliope

Oh no! How sad for the poor little groundhog family 😢 I love the chameleon cantos form though! ✨

        • Tristan Robert Lange

Yeah, very sad. I still haven't gotten over it. I may have another poem in the works from a different angle. I just love animals. I can't be mad at my dog, though I wanted to be in the moment. But my dog was just being a dog. Wish I could have prevented it, but it is what it is. Nature.

That said, I am super glad you like the Chameleon Cantos form. That makes my day! Glad it delivered! 🌦️🦔💔🧠

A moment alive, Spring's tender whisper breathes new. Wesley's paws, soft on Verdant blades—his world begins.
A break in the air, Scent shifts. Shadows swell heavy, Instinct falters.
Jaws crush the soft dawn, Rapture's song, devoured whole. Silence consumes day.

Indeed. Powerful poetic response, my friend. I apologize for the delay. Pulled my back out miserably on Tuesday and it has been a painful slog ever since. Thank you for your time and poetic engagement! 🌹👏

            • arqios

No Ned for apologies. All is well . It so good of you to let us know what’s up… saves us wondering and panicking 😊🕊🙏🏻

              • Tristan Robert Lange

Truth! This is such caring community. I love it here and am glad to let you all know rather than cause any sort unnecessary worry! 😎❤️ Thanks again, my friend!

                Excellent work.

              • Cheeky Missy

Alas, having more or less damned dearest Chloe with an exposé of her previous exploits, who could have dreamed she'd join her victims?! I'm so very sorry you've lost her. This gorgeous first piece in a series of three so very dark in its implications, I never thought--. Beautifully rendered with excellent imagery and a painfully haunting poignancy. Thank you for sharing.

                • Tristan Robert Lange

Yes. It was horrifying to watch her do that. Also mystifying how she was that full of life and now is gone. I can't hold her nature against her and, evidently, neither did that Groundhog family. They're still out there doing their thing and thriving, minus baby Wesley. Thank you so much, my friend. Glad it resonated! 🌦️🦔💔🧠
