The Catch

Tristan Robert Lange

What happens
When one catches a fish
They didn’t intend to catch.
Like two arms and a chest
In fishnets.
Dare I cut it free?

Your poem "The Catch" revolves around the unexpected outcomes and consequences of our actions, particularly as they relate to relationships and intimacy. The subject matter touches upon the complexities of desire, connection, and the ethical implications of entrapment, be it physical or emotional. The imagery of fishing serves as a metaphor for the pursuit of love or connection, while the notion of an unintended catch hints at the surprise and potential regret that can accompany such encounters.

Wow, thank you, my friend. You’ve offered such a perceptive and layered read here...makes me feel truly seen. I love how you drew out the metaphor of entrapment and desire, and the tension between intention and consequence. That’s very much the kind of dialogue I hoped this poem would spark. Your time and your analysis are very much appreciated.🎣🕸️🤔🙏

Pocono sounds better in than Kokomo (sp.?)

      • Tristan Robert Lange

Haha! Right? I mean, the Beach Boys never sang “Pocono...we’ll get there fast and freeze real slow”—but they missed out! 🤪 And, that's how I've always spelled it, so we must be right, no? 🤣 Always good to see you, my friend. 🎣🕸️🤔🙏

Catching the unintended is most complicated and extracting them from the net can be dangerous to both the fisherman and the fish as well as damaging the net. It deserves contemplation not in the release but in how to pursue with the least damage. The size also has implications in regard to the release. This poem in its brevity is a net in which my mind is now caught being pulled into deeper reflections and toward a boat of memories from which I would like to extract myself. A most wonderful short that provokes deep thought. A fave I should add that if that picture is of you it bears a striking resemblance to my youngest son

        • Tristan Robert Lange

What a beautifully layered response, Soren. You really caught the core of it...how the extraction, the entanglement, and even the net itself carry weight. I love that you brought in scale, both literally and metaphorically. Thank you for letting yourself be...ahem...caught in this one. 🎣🕸️🤔🙏 And as for the resemblance...I wish! I mean the hairstyle...check. The tattoos, more than check. The devilishly good looks and the physique...😅🤷‍♂️ All jokes aside, a cool guy he must be! Does he write poetry too?

          • sorenbarrett

The hairstyle checks not the tattoos but the physique is him no poetry he does Jujitsu

            • Tristan Robert Lange

Ooh. Jujitsu is a artform in its own right. And yeah, I would imagine his physique would match!

Yes, I do love how you conveniently did NOT use an "r," proving there is a price for having engaged thus. Oh! Eloquent brevity! Oh freighted catch! Cut the limbed creature lose, and pay the ultimate price for such a catch. Fall in love and set it free, to learn whether or not you'll be sans a heart thereafter. Beautifully rendered with excellent imagery and a haunting poignancy. Thank you for sharing.

              • Tristan Robert Lange

Thank you so very much my dear friend! “Fall in love and set it free”...that’s exactly it, the wound and wonder tangled. And, on another note, only because of your savvy eyes, I did catch the wandering “r,” now shepherded back into place—but hey, typing poetry comes at a price, right? 😄 All jokes aside...thank you for catching that! 😅 🎣🕸️🤔🙏

Can we ever truly know? Life is a series of questions, and how we respond can lead us in so many different ways. We take the chance or we don't. Good poem for pondering!

                • Tristan Robert Lange

Thank you so much! And, that’s exactly it, Bella...the questions often shape more than the answers ever could. I really appreciate your thoughtful read…this one was definitely meant to leave one pondering, so that makes my day! Thank you for taking the time! 🎣🕸️🤔🙏

                • Poetic Licence

A difficult quandery to be in as I suspect many have been, my nicer says you have to think carefully at how, when and why to do it, my other side says absolutely and quicker the better, enjoyed the read

                  • Tristan Robert Lange

Haha, For sure. I feel both sides of that internal debate...and I think that tension is exactly where this poem lives. Sometimes there’s no right answer, just the risk you’re willing, or not willing, to take. Very insightful, indeed, my friend. Thank you so much! 🎣🕸️🤔🙏

                    • Poetic Licence

                      You are very welcome

I thought it said Pinocchio Mountains. Doh! lol.

                      • Tristan Robert Lange

LOL! I mean...if anyone’s getting tangled in nets and wishful thinking, it would be Pinocchio, right? But wait. Pause a second. Fido...do you see what I see? Orchi's nose has just grown...wait, now it's hooking up...wait? What's that Fido? Oh, duh! That's just Popeye's arm. Damn that spinach! 😄 All that rubbish aside...gotta admit, “Pinocchio Mountains” has a certain mythic ring to it! Always glad for your humor, dear friend. 🎣🕸️🤔🙏

                        • orchidee

                          That dang spinach! lol.
