Color Blind?

Tristan Robert Lange

The truth is:
I see color and so do you—
The grass is a vibrant green,
The sunny sky shades of blue—
Yes, we see color, both of us,
It is the truth that you and I do.

But for the grass, so green,
Massively manicured—not tall—
It would not be all that mean,
Not really that mean at all,
To say the green ain’t the grass,
But its chlorophyll content seen.

The sky,
If you’ve never wondered why
It may appear so deeply blue—
There’s no reason for us to lie—
Is filled with gasses, colorless to you.
To me too.
It’s true.

So then,
From here, what shall we ever do,
If we won’t see that the substance, not color,
Of another soul is what’s true?
For souls are colorless,
Neither green, red, purple or blue.

You say you don’t see color,
Yet you insist you are white—
You’re the most colorless of all—
But what a horrible plight
Before this salvific kind of call:

White is not colorless at all.
It’s a restless rainbow of colors
Of which, friend, you are but one shade.

So, please,
Stop acting color blind, when,
You know in your mind,
Color is haunting you all the time.

It’s not you dear friend,
And we’ve all done the time—
Please will you see the truth
While you’re in your prime—
Rather, it’s society’s brainwashing
That commits the real crime.

The moment to change—that’s here.
Now is the right word—the right time.

One hundred percent behind you and this poem and its meaning. This poem moved me from its metaphor and message. So well worded my friend it touches deep.

I really like your writing )) I think it is our essence ( soul/ higher selves our true self .. that’s what’s important .. not just the way someone might look etc ..

A interesting and nicely expressed writing .. made me think

True .. isn’t just always what we see .. it’s also what’s behind that

              • Cheeky Missy

Since my perspiration dyes my whites an ugly yellowish orange, while I'm truly of the denomination spoken against too clearly herein, I remain on the fence. Last I checked the Scriptures declare plainly, "...God...hath made of ONE BLOOD ALL NATIONS OF MEN FOR TO DWELL ON THE FACE OF THE EARTH,..." nor have I ever found any justification for the false doctrine of alleged "races," of people. The Scriptures declare how the earth was divided up after the flood, this perverse, false teaching divisive sans a basis. Frankly, I personally find every discussion on this topic divisive. Excellently rendered with superb imagery and a twisting, haunting poignancy ever revolving. Thank you for sharing.

                • Tristan Robert Lange

Thank you for your thoughtful reflection, Missy. I hear your concern about how race has been used to divide rather than unite. I think that’s part of what this poem is trying to wrestle with too.

As for “white”—I totally get where you’re coming from. I don’t see “white” as a true racial group, either. That is the point this poem is attempting to make in part. I'm of German, Irish and English descent—Anglo-Saxon, more precisely—and even that carries layers of history, culture, and complexity that don’t fit into a color box. “White” was a label invented to draw lines of power and exclusion based around skin color, not one rooted in true biblical or scientific truth.

So I don’t think we’re actually far apart in heart at all. My hope is simply that we all look deeper—past color, past category—and into one another’s humanity. That’s where the soul dwells, as Caring Dove put it above. And maybe, just maybe, that’s where healing can start too.

Thank you again for engaging so deeply, as always. Dialog is where positive things can happen and I always aim to spark it. 🎨🧠⏳🙏

                • Friendship

Well-written, your poem "Color Blind" revolves around the concept of perception, specifically, how individuals perceive color and identity in the context of race and society. The speaker challenges the notion of being "color blind," emphasizing that while one may claim not to see color, societal influences shape perceptions of race and identity. The subject matter addresses the complexity of race, urging readers to recognize the depth and richness of individual identity beyond superficial color associations.

                  • Tristan Robert Lange

Thank you so much for this thoughtful reflection, my friend. You really captured the core of what I was wrestling with in this piece...the disconnect between what we say we see (or don’t) and what society programs into us all the same. I deeply appreciate how you recognized the difference between honoring identity and merely glossing over it in the name of “color blindness.” That surface-level denial only deepens the harm. Your read and analysis gives me hope. 🎨🧠⏳🙏

                  • Doggerel Dave

Subtle crafting meant I, wrapped in the pleasant way in which the science of colour perception was visited, did not realise until ’Yet you insist you are white—' where you are really going with this, Tristan. Boom!
(BTW any reference to societal brainwashing is going to pass muster with me..)
Not sure though colour in this sense haunts me all the time. It did at the other end of my life when those societal brain washings really were all I had, but life and experience has dried me off almost completely….

                    • Tristan Robert Lange

Boom indeed! 💥 At this point, Dave, you don’t seem the least bit haunted at all! It takes a lot of unlearning, doesn’t it? I’m glad to be here with you on the more enlightened side of things. Thank you so much for your time and thoughts, my friend! 🎨🧠⏳🙏

                      • Doggerel Dave

Great piece (in case I didn't mention it..)

                        • Tristan Robert Lange

Thank you, Dave. Sincerely. Much appreciated!

                        • Teddy.15

What a magnificent piece of writing, your metaphor has many meanings and it really speaks to your reader, I'm behind you all the way on this it's not only clever it's wisdom. 🌹

                          • Tristan Robert Lange

Wow! Thank you, dear Teddy! I am glad that the poem resonated so strongly. Very much appreciated, my friend...your fave and your thoughts. 🎨🧠⏳🙏

                          • Tony Grannell

                            Here, here! Tristan,

If you ask me, what is my favourite colour? Off white, how far off? All the way to black and whole spectrum of colours in between. I see colour for what it is and people for what they are and let not colour, race or sexual orientation define them. I meet and greet people as they come and recognise them for who they are, that is, the human spirit that they portray, be it bad or good for both characteristics come in all colours, shapes and sizes. A great, great poem, my friend.

You are in fine health and happy, I trust,

                            Tony.

                            • Tristan Robert Lange

Indeed. People are people. Thank you so much for your time, analysis and support. Truly appreciated. I am well and trust you are too. Thanks again, Tony! 🎨🧠⏳🙏
