Nocturne, a Lullaby

Muse of Calliope

To the tune of Nocturne op. 4 no. 2 by Johann Kaspar Mertz

"A" section

In the meadow, in the night-time

Hear the breeze flow

Right through the wind-chime

Even sorrow has no place here;

Cast all your cares away, don't fear.

"A" section repeated

You are safe here, you are loved, dear

I will keep you

Safe if you stay near

I will never let you suffer;

Every tear from you brings hurt.

"B" section

So even in, the darkest night of nights,

when you are in the valley of the shadow of death

just don't fear, no, I'll hold you tight,

don't let go, just, have some faith and I'll make things right.

"B" section repeated

Because even in, the darkest night of nights,

when you are in the valley of the shadow of death

just don't fear, no, I'll hold you tight

keep you safe from, all that hides deep in shadowed night

"C" section- no words, just instrumental

  • Comment from author about the poem: Mertz\\\' Nocturne op 4 no 2 has 3 main sections of music; the first section, \\\"A\\\" is repeated twice, the second section \\\"B\\\" is also repeated twice, and there is a final section \\\"C\\\" which is played once before the song ends. While learning to play this nocturne on the guitar, I wrote lyrics for the A and B sections so that I could play the piece more expressively while holding the meaning behind the lyrics in my mind.\r\n\r\nThe line breaks and commas in the poem may be a little awkward at times, but I chose the format to fit the melody; where I have placed an unusual comma, that means the melody either pauses at that point or the note is meant to be \\\"sung\\\" or played longer.
