NOT MYSELF

NAZIA ZAHRA

I look for reasons for you to be right
I try not to be myself with all might

I look for reasons i look for clues
I flip everything defying all rules

I change the masks, style my hair
be anything except the one beneath the layer

I try not to be the one you hate
but every time seem to be a bit late

I hate myself when u hate me
I hate myself when u see me

but no matter how hard i try
my presence you will always deny

my looks will disgust you always
even when I'm hiding in sideways

  • Comment from author about the poem: This poem is about the quiet war we fight with ourselves when we crave someone’s approval so much that we start erasing who we are. It reflects the masks we wear, the shame we feel in our own skin, and the desperation to be “enough” for someone who may never accept us. It’s a raw confession of self-doubt, rejection, and the pain of losing yourself while chasing love or validation.

To need someone to like you so much that we must change ourselves tells us that that relationship is not meant to be. A lovely poem
