Embers

sorenbarrett

Of them days I'll always remember, till my cold bleak December
When frost touches my hair leaving a balding blank frozen stair
My roots did me dismember, remaining only a glowing ember
Of a time more fair, when t'was no need of coals to warm stark despair

With seasoned memory's I stoke the fire, kindling light's dying desire
Poking charcoal cold and black, smoke of hope to never come back
Life's oven of sooty clinkers smudges on the minds of aged thinkers
Dreams of smoke drift away on fading wings of yesterday

That closing image of dreams drifting away on smoke stayed with me, Soren. It’s tender and haunting all at once…a powerful finish, my friend. 🌹🖤🙏🕯️🐦‍⬛
