Plastic legacy

sorenbarrett

What a world we have made
cups and spoons that don't biodegrade
plastic plants collecting dust
Empty bottles of polyethylene, refined rocks that rust
Styrofoam and pressed sawdust boards of pride
Toxic chemicals surf the tide
An asphalt sheet pulled over the flower's bed
Steel and glass forests shade our head
What happened to crafts shaped of wood and stone
Music and foods home grown
All is fake including news
Our monument bitcoin and knock off tennis shoes

Soren, this is sharp. The images stack heavy...plastic plants, asphalt sheets, steel forests...and it all lands as indictment. That line about “an asphalt sheet pulled over the flower’s bed”…that one really hit. It says everything about what we’ve paved over in the name of progress. Haunting image, my friend, and the close is biting truth. 🌹🖤🙏🕯️🐦‍⬛

Thank you my friend your comment is most appreciated. I have a thing about plastic, can't drink from it, eat off it, don't like it's feel or looks and that is the wold I live in.

    • orchidee

Ohh, pass it all to me. I will give it to KP to eat! lol.

And they want to colonize Moon and Mars after making Earth uninhabitable !

        • sorenbarrett

Thanks Orchi for the read and yes she can have all the plastic she wants

I tell you what is not fake? Your fabulous poetry. What an epic marvelous poem, what a world we do live in all so very true what you have said in poetic form, I want a world in which artisan is appreciated and loved. 🌹

          • sorenbarrett

Thank you Teddy for your read and support but no they will not allow that it is not profitable. I appreciate your read and comment. Such kind words to make my day

It's so interesting because it is all made from nature if you consider the elements part of nature. I don't know how it's possible to create something so...long-lasting and permanent.

            • sorenbarrett

Yes indeed it is made from petroleum products past dead plants and animals but being man processed it seems fake to me and cheap. Maybe I'm just old fashioned but I would rather have real wood or stone than plastic. Can't drink out of plastic only glass and won't eat off plastic either or use plastic utensils or use plastic straws. Doesn't taste right. Thanks so much for the read and comment it is appreciated

              • NinjaGirl

I agree with you, and it's not old fashioned... I just speculate on the process of making plastics...that's all! Though...I hate paper straws because they fall apart!

Sharp humor, soren. A lot of truth lurks in sharp humor. Love it.

                • sorenbarrett

Thanks Jerry just don't like plastic it seems cheap to me. Appreciate your read and comment yes I would say it is dark humor

                • arqios

Truly living in a world of grand delusion it would appear. We are such a contradictory species, probably the laughing stock of the rest of nature. 🙏🏻

                  • sorenbarrett

Thanks so much Cryptic for the read and support it is most appreciated. Yes we are not only fake but self destructive a bad combination.

                    • arqios

Certainly so, Soren. And perhaps Poetry does help to assuage and somehow redirect that bent as far as it can.

                    • Goldfinch60

So true soren, we just throw things away nowadays and do not repair them if broken.

                      • sorenbarrett

Thank you Gold for the read and understanding. Things are built too cheaply to be repaired and for good reason so that they can sell another.

Despite your justified aesthetic objections, plastic has it's place in this society today; however, its all pervasiveness, inadequate disposal and thus pollution which are the real issues.

                        • sorenbarrett

Once again you are so right everything does have its place. I would say that if there were no plastic bottles or styrofoam cups there would be none to pick up. It worked quite well when there was a deposit on glass bottles.

                          • sorenbarrett

Thank you Dave appreciate your review and comment. Everything has its place you are right. If there were no plastic bottles or styrofoam cups there would be none to pick up.

                            • Doggerel Dave

Agreed. Parts (nearly all) of Oz have a deposit scheme on certain glass bottles and metal cans. In embryo form at present but hope to extend it to plastics because there is becoming a shortage of garbage dump sites.....

                              Ah yes but magical
Plastics will save the forest, don’t you know what’s good for us?!

                              • sorenbarrett

Thanks so much for the read. It is funny that the response can be predicted by one's age, Younger people see plastic as something natural and of great use while us older people see it as cheap, invasive and unnatural.
