On This Special Day

Tom Dylan

Notice of absence from Tom Dylan
Sorry if there is a delay in responses. Sometimes life gets in the way. As John Lennon said, life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans.

It's my father's birthday today,

another special day, a landmark

we are so very lucky to see.

I rush over straight from work,

with Licorice Allsorts

and a bottle of single malt whiskey.

I want to tell him I love him,

and thank him for everything.

Instead I tell him a bad joke

I heard at work.

He replies and tells me a joke

that's older than I am,

that I've heard hundreds

of times before.

And we raise our glasses

and laugh with tears in our eyes.

This relationship with your father definitely deserved the malt.

    • Tom Dylan

Thanks, Dave. A few years ago, we almost lost him, so every birthday and fathers day is really special. I will be heading over after work today to raise a glass with the old feller. 🙂

        Good for you, Tom.

        A fine write Tom.
Erm, unlike an aggressive guy I met (did I?). I said to him, 'You're special', and he punched me on the nose. Doh! lol.

        • Tom Dylan

Haha! Nice one, mate. You always make me smile. 😀

Or - I may have said 'How are ya?' but he still punched me on the nose, and said 'What you after; you trying to con me? What do ya mean hello?' (LOL).

Thanks a lot, Andy. I'll wish him many happy returns tonight, while helping him drink his birthday whiskey. 🙂 Cheers, Tom.

In old excuses we make company and pass the hours. Comfort wears old cloths. A most lovely write of a relationship.

Thanks so much, Soren. Really appreciate your comments as always.

Happy Birthday to your Dad. Great write. Enjoy your whisky. Bend some rules and be two eggs short of a dozen.

Tom, this is tender. The love comes through in the small rituals...bad jokes, old jokes, whiskey shared. That image of raising glasses and laughing with tears says it all. Beautifully captured, my friend. 🌹🖤🙏🕯️

You say that you want to tell him that 'You love him and thank him' then say 'Instead' .
Tell him Tom . I never did and regret it now.
Happy birthday to your Dad. Raise a glass from me . Fine Poem.
