Nine Eleven

Doggerel Dave

To all wishing to memorialize

Nine Eleven - a tragedy, What for?

Who died there or lost loved ones, hear their cries;

I shout: ‘Innocent people die in war’.

You raise a very important point my friend. Innocent people die every day in so many forms of violence. But when lives are taken en masse, as an attack on our country, it becomes sacrosanct to memorialize. Is it the lives lost or our national pride that we honor? If it is the lives lost, then we should memorialize all those killed by gun violence, drugs, domestic abuse, drunk driving, and on and on. Quite a contemplative write.

    • Doggerel Dave

Hi Bella, good to hear from you.
Your defense of memorialization in your country is understandable. Your POV makes perfect sense.
The genesis of this quarter of an hour quatrain was my misguided reading of an overblown entry by the poet-esss below who isn’t by any stretch American but can be handy with the truth and for the most part provides posts here almost totally lacking in any real content. Why anyone would believe anything she writes is beyond me.
Your ‘lives lost’ listing is spot on from a local perspective. But wars everywhere (of which the twin towers tragedy was a part) are the cause of massive innocent casualties worldwide. This one has, I suppose, special resonance because of its catastrophic nature on American soil rather than overseas…

      Good write D.
Meanwhile, in my NS moments - I thought you was telling me what time me train leaves - 9.11. I turned up at 9.11am and me train was 9.11pm. Ya didn't tell me if it was A.M. or P.M. Do shut up now Orchi, says Fido. lol.

      • Doggerel Dave

Gonna let that one lie, orchi and move swiftly on.

      • NinjaGirl

Yes, people die. But can we not recognize those who sacrificed themselves for others? People get shot all the time. But can we not celebrate those who save others, those who risk their lives? I was hoping for a poem of recognition of the event and how violence is not the answer. This is not your best work, I hope you continue to write with a bit more respect for others. Best, NinjaGirl.

        • Doggerel Dave

Of course we can celebrate those who save others. They usually are very well celebrated. My piece is about innocent people who die in war. Start reading carefully. To whom have I not shown sufficient respect?

          • NinjaGirl

I apologize that this comment came as a harsh criticism. I simply believe that asking "what for?" is a bit of an ignorant question given the events, and these things should be remembered. I would agree that the innocent people who die in war also need to be remembered just as much as 9/11.

            • Doggerel Dave

              What for? Ignorant?
I'm a rhymer, and as I pointed out to Bella above "this quarter of an hour quatrain' was a response to the pin on this subject further down the page. With more care and time it could have read:
              “To all wishing to memorialize
The tragedy of nine eleven - Why?
              Who died there or lost loved ones, hear their cries;
I shout: ‘ In war innocent people die’.
However, I’ve been using the original phrase for a long time, particularly in a debate on war at MPS way back when. But the lying witch below made an issue out of It: https://mypoeticside.com/show-poem-192418
So I stuck with the original and felt the need to respond quickly while the topic was hot.
Actually what nine eleven represents to America (not to deny all the people who died) and makes it significant is it was the day the war arrived on American soil, rather than continue beyond the borders.
              Take care and stay safe.

I can assure you I will not block you or blast you online. But I do tend to share my opinion when I see something I disagree with or am not sure about. After a bit of consideration, I do believe I understand how your poem was meant to be taken. I take it we're likely on the same side. I apologize for reading it wrong/interpreting it differently.

                • Doggerel Dave

Definitely on the same side I feel. NinjaGirl, I wish I'd stumbled over you before - it would have been the least painful stumble I've had here.☺️
I can take disagreement, believe me - should be a vital learning experience when it is civil and rational.
                  Take care.

                  • NinjaGirl

Research--a vital thing before constructing an argument. I forgot as well. I suppose it could have turned out differently! You too.

                  • Tristan Robert Lange

Innocent lives dying in any way is a terrible tragedy...war certainly one of the most major players in that. I really liked what Bella said, which holds true for me too: "If it is the lives lost, then we should memorialize all those killed by gun violence, drugs, domestic abuse, drunk driving, and on and on." That's the rub right. So many innocent lives, such selective memorialization...collectively (not necessarily individually) centered on National Pride. And that brings me to what you said too, "This one has, I suppose, special resonance because of its catastrophic nature on American soil rather than overseas…" Yes. That is the truth. The USA can almost turn a blind eye on the suffering going on elsewhere, but when it happens here... 💥. So all of that and a bag of chips and I love that your poem says it all more succinctly than I could in my damn reply. 🤣

                    • Doggerel Dave

Can't thank you enough for that one, Tristan. Although I'm used to a challenge from time to time, it's nice to get an affirmation too.

                    • Goldfinch60

So true Dave it is the innocent that die in war.

Glad you see it my way, Andy.

Couldn't help but press the fave thingy. Few words, a bucketful of meaning and emotions. Well done Sir 👌

Response here more than I could have hoped for - many thanks.

I don't normally delete a contribution to a thread under one of my pins but here I have just done so.Teddy15 arrived with a contribution which was essentially a repeat of the rancid comments to be found here:
                          https://mypoeticside.com/show-poem-192418
She's not very original. Should have blocked her a long time ago. Situation rectified now.

Debate has moved to Political Violence.... Could now do with a new pin. However thought I might tuck it in here for now...

9/11 was a hammer blow to America.
3000 dead, but more importantly an invasion.
This strikes to the heart of Americans, and I don't doubt countless lives were avenged from it.
Sadly, the innocents always get it and no memorial will bring them back.

                          • Doggerel Dave

9/11 was in fact itself vengeance big time.
