AUTUMN RETURN

Michael Edwards

AUTUMN RETURN

Against the thin autumnal skies

a bell rings from a profiled tower

as boys emerge in haste.

Multi-coloured clothing shed

by naked trees in filigree

is kicked and crunched by black-laced shoes

where brambles threaten red chaffed legs

along the hidden path to home

Opaque streams of drifting smoke

point to bonfires newly lit

where men in caps dig sodden soil

to sounds of stainless steel in clay

beyond the hedge where boys pass by.

With muddied shoes and tousled hair

the unseen boys materialize

on tarmacadamed roads to home.

This poem casts a shadow of another time in another clime reading as classical as Thomas Hardy it gives an autumn feel of crisp air and a feeling that I have been there. A fave

Great observation - I'm greatly influenced by TH who is probably my favourite author. When I read his books I forget the plot and get fixated by his masterful use of the language.

Love his books too and the plots are dark.

This poem is well written with good imagery and expresses a thorough point. Nicely done.

Thanks so much for your kind comment.

A beauty and a cutie wrapped in one post! Love it, Michael! Give Stanley a nice pet for me! 🌹🖤🙏🕯️🐦‍⬛

Thanks Tristan - sure will give him a hug - as I type this he is asleep on the back of the chair with his bum on one shoulder and his head on the other snoring in my ear.

A fine write and pic of a friend of Fido's M.
Does Stanley also read poems and bark at anyone conveniently 'forgetting' to mark certain poems 18+? lol. Does he count the (sylla)berles too?

            • Michael Edwards

He marks lots of things - mostly posts (the sticky up out of the ground ones not the posts on mps) and trees.
