Tune: St Bees
('Hark my soul, it is the Lord')
2 Chronicles 20 v.12 - 25 parts
*********
The prophet Jahaziel
Did speak unto Judah all
When enemy did surround
Them, in troubles they were found
Prophet said, Hearken to me
And King Jehoshaphat [of Judah] see
Thus says the Lord unto you
You have prayed, I heard you true
Be not afraid nor dismayed
By enemy host arrayed
For the battle is not yours
But God's, vic'try He ensures
They went out, did sing praise to
The Lord, their faith did renew
Their enemies they did fight
Among themselves and took flight
So the Lord did answer prayer
Heard the words that were prayed there
O our God, will you not judge
Them, though they seem not to budge
For we have no might against
This great company, we hence
Know not what to do, but our
Eyes are on you and your power

Oh Orchi this hymn seems one that would rouse one to battle but with confidence in the leader. I always wondered why people are so violent and always justify it by saying God told them to. A good hymn
Thank you SB. The Israelites had their enemies and had to battle against enemy nations to enter and to keep their 'Promised Land'. This seems to be why Old Testament battles were justified. But yes, people can say 'God told me to' fight, and it could be an excuse, or paranoia even in some cases, if 'hearing voices'.
You are most welcome Orchi I wonder how the story would read from a Philistine Bible or Canaanite
I suppose the Philistines or Canaanites would see Israel as their enemy. A sort of vice versa.
Good write O! ποΈπ
Thank you A.
Welcome OποΈππ»
βThat was that a case of,
Be still, and know that I am God.
Thank you 2.
Good one Orchi.
Thank you Gold.
The thing that always confused me. Are the Israelites' god's people and who are the others.
People always say they fight in the name of god, or maybe use the name of god for fighting.
Enlighten me.
I think it was because of the other nations idolatry - a case of the relatively 'good' people inheriting the 'bad' people's lands. Though then again, Israel had times of idolatry too, in turning away from God (capital 'G' there) to other gods (small 'g' there) which were called no-gods by the prophets.
There can be some hypocrisy too, and hiding behind 'religion', in saying 'God is on OUR side', and then the opposition may say the same thing!
Hop this helps.
