A Son Brings Salvation - OT/NT Series 1

Tune: Cross of Jesus

('Come, thou long expected Jesus')

Matthew 1 v.20-23

*********

An angel to Jospeh appeared

Unto him he drew and neared

Said, Joseph, you son of David

Fear not, but by me be led

Fear not, take as your wife Mary

For the child to be born, see

Of her He be of the Spirit

Conceived, thus your way is lit

And she shall bring forth a son, shall

The name JESUS sure Him call

For He shall save from their sins His

People, prophecy says this

Prophet Isaiah* said, Behold

A virgin with child, 'tis told

She shall bring forth a son, and call

Him God with us, Emmanuel

  • Comment from author about the poem: A hymn-poem in 8.7.8.7 A series possibly, of some Old Testament (OT) fulfilled in the New Testament (NT) from Matthew's Gospel. Some versions have 'young girl' or 'young woman' for 'virgin' in Isaiah 7 v.14, but that alters the whole story for the worse.

Orchi you know I hate Christmas but this is a wonderful hymn for the season that softens the blow of its advent. This is really one of my favorite of yours very well done and a fave. Thank you SB. It's the run up to Christmas that I don't like. Yes, oops, what is 'Fer'? lol. I think you looked about 8 mins after I posted the poem. I returned earlier to correct it to 'bring'.
Also I hate Christmas morning cos some fat beardy bloke has come down me chimney and I have to spend all morning clearing up the soot in the lounge. Christmas dinner's not until Boxing Day! lol.

On another note, the whole virgin vs. young woman debate is actually pretty fascinating. In the Septuagint...the oldest full compilation of the Hebrew Scriptures translated into Greek...the translators chose the word παρθένος (parthenos) meaning virgin. But that was a mistranslation of the original Hebrew, which uses עַלְמָה (‘almāh), meaning young woman of marriageable age, not necessarily a virgin. That translation slip is one of the big reasons the Jewish community later produced their own standardized Hebrew Bible — the Tanakh — to preserve the original wording and avoid theological misunderstandings created by the Greek translation.

Thank you T. (Not just now, Popeye! lol). Apart from the miracle in itself of a virgin birth, it has to be so, as we humans are all descended from Adam and Eve's line, and inherit their sinful nature, from when they ate the forbidden fruit (apple, or whatever fruit it was). The Holy Spirit 'breaks in' to human history, with God as Jesus' heavenly Father. I see what you mean by parthenos though.
I had a feeling someone was going to say that, as you did, but some folk get more contentious about it!

You set the stage my friend, the season is upon us. A beautiful story that never grows old, thank you!
