Tune: Merton
('Hark, a herald [or thrilling] voice is sounding')
Matthew 3 v.1-6
*******
John the Baptist he came preaching
Judah's wilderness reaching
Saying, Repent you, for kingdom
Of heaven is near for each one
This is he of prophet spoken
Isaiah* spoke unto men
Prophesying, The voice of one
Crying in wilderness done
Saying, Prepare now you the way
Of the Lord, soon comes His day
Make His path straight, so did John there
Have garment of camel's hair
And leather girdle belt he wore
Had food locusts, honey sure
Then went out to him at his call
Jerusalem, Judah all
And were baptised of him therein
River Jordan, confessed sin
Ready for the Lord's appearance
He would visit them soon hence

- Comment from author about the poem: A hymn-in 8.7.8.7. A bit more cheerful theme today. I did not set out on Advent themes particularly for each poem in this series, though a lot of them have Advent-type themes. Sometimes the hymns in the clips refer to the actual Biblical event. It's said this hymn is based on a Latin hymn which may date back to the 5th Century.

Another well constructed hymn that calls out to the reader as if one listening in the day. The day has come and past but each needs to hear the message. Good one Orchi
Thank you SB. 'The day' often means the day of Christ's return, His second coming.
You are most welcome Orchi we didn't give him a very good welcome the first time why would it be better the next time
The poem revolves around the prophetic role of John the Baptist as the forerunner to Jesus Christ, emphasizing the call for repentance and preparation for the coming of the Kingdom of Heaven.
Thank you F.
Well, we know one who has a voluminous laugh...Ah-gah-gah-gah-glug-glug! LOL! Excellent hymn poem, methinks, my friend! Well done! 🌹🖤🙏🕯️🐦⬛
Thank you T. Can't we silence the glugging one?! lol.
Apparently not! LOL!
When I hear the words repent, I always think they mean me.
When the lord reappears, I want to be there.
Thank you P.
Good one Orchi.
Thank you Gold.
