Hope Of Healing - OT/NT Series 6

Tune: Winchester New

('On Jordan's bank the Baptist's cry')

Matthew 8 v.14-17

*********

Then when Jesus was come into

Peter's house, then came into view

His wife's mother, sick with fever

Jesus, His compassion did stir

And He touched her hand, and fever

It departed, it did leave her

And she arose and served them there

Rejoiced, her healing she did share

When the evening was come they brought

Many to Jesus, Him they sought

Those infirm, demon-afflicted {1}

Cast out by the word He there said

And healed all that were sick, that it

Might be fulfilled in every whit

What was by Isaiah spoken

The people they witnessed it them

For Isaiah said, Christ Himself {2}

Took our infirmities, and health

Restored to us, for He so bore

Our sicknesses, here mercy sure

-------

{1} I've toned down the words a bit - actual words in some versions say 'possessed with devils'.

{2} Isaiah 53 v.4

  • Comment from author about the poem: A hymn-poem in 8.8.8.8. This shows one of Jesus' healings, in this Old Testament/New Testament (OT/NT) series. The theme is not so much a debate about Christian healing, or spiritual healing, but more on the fulfilment of OT prophecies by Jesus in NT days, which Matthew in his gospel notes in many places. This series continues, moving on from Advent season. Also, I'm running out of Advent tunes soon.

    Well done my friend. I used to, as a child, to take the healings as literal but now tend to see them as more metaphorical but what would one expect of a poem and the Bible is so poetic, this is a wonderful hymn for the believers in what ever manner. Well done Orchi and don't worry about running out of advent material you can write a hymn about Santa and the elves heathens need hymns too.

      ✔️Well Writ Soren. Looking forward to a hymn about Santa and the elves, another mythical figure I don't believe in, but that doesn't prevent me from being entertained...

        Thank you SB. And now the first line of a heathen hymn - 'And each year some fat beardy bloke descends the chimney...' lol.

        • Doggerel Dave

          Not very melodious that first line, is it?

          • orchidee

            I will make it: And now each year, thou fattest beardiest guy descendeth down ye chimney - sounds a bit old fashioned now.

            • Doggerel Dave

              'Tis a bit old fashioned..... suits you down to the ground.

              D Dave nicked my 'reply' spot - so here's another reply! I do still believe in 'faith healings' for today, also 'spiritual gifts' to use for today, though some say that both died out after the first apostles and disciples died off.
