Tune: Lyngham

('O for a thousand tongues to sing')

Matthew 12 v.17-21

*********

Jesus, God's servant, was fulfilled

As God His Father willed

As God His Father willed

Prophecy of Isaiah* made

The purpose, plan outlaid

The purpose, plan outlaid

The purpose, the purpose, plan outlaid

Saying, behold, my servant, He

My beloved, chosen be

My beloved, chosen be

In whom my soul it is pleased well

He of my ways does tell

He of my ways does tell

He of, He of my ways does tell

I will on Him put my spirit

So shall His path be lit

So shall His path be lit

And He shall show judgement unto

The Gentiles and to Jews

The Gentiles and to Jews

The Gentiles, the Gentiles and to Jews

He shall not strive, nor cry out, nor

Shall hear Him shouting, for

Shall hear Him shouting, for

A bruised reed here He shall not break

And smoking flax not slake* (*quench)

And smoking flax not slake

And smoking, and smoking flax not slake

He shall send forth judgement, justice

To victory, sure is this

To victory, sure is this

And in His name shall the Gentiles

Trust, all people, all styles

Trust, all people, all styles

Trust all, trust all people, all styles

------

* Isaiah 42 v.1-4

  • Comment from author about the poem: A hymn-poem in 'extended' 8.6.8.6. There can be more ways than one of singing the repeated lines. The last lines of each verse are not typos, but one way to sing them with part of the previous line repeated, and then the whole line repeated. A bit like: 'I've said it, so I will say it again, then part-say it again, then repeat the whole line again'. Are you a confused laddie/lassie now? lol.

Well Orchi as I hear it there were progressive roots as far back as Isaiah but from what I read it was Paul that pulled for bringing in the gentiles Peter was against it. A good read that has a history.
