That's When I Wrote

Katie B.

             That’s When I Wrote

I wrote before red birds could sing

Before lions knew of their courage

When constellations had no name

I wrote before the moon could shine

Before the ocean knew there was a sea

When words offered no meaning

I wrote before time was tender

Before crisp nights sang themselves to sleep

When rivers flowed without intention

I wrote before I knew I was me

Before curiosity came to call

When the sky was not yet sugar candy bliss

That’s when I wrote

This poem revolves around the act of creation and the intrinsic nature of writing as a means of self-discovery and expression. The poet reflects on the timelessness and purity of their writing process, emphasizing that it exists in a realm before the world was fully formed or understood.

You got it. You derive more meaning from my poems than I do myself, that is an amazing talent. Thank you for always sharing your takeaway from my work, it is really incredible. How do you have such insight? Thank you, Friendship!

I appreciate your kind words, but I'd like to clarify that my background includes studying journalism in both school and college. Additionally, I'm a highly sensitive individual who tends to analyze things deeply.

I am highly sensitive myself, have you ever heard of an empath?

          • Friendship

Yes, as a hypersensitive empath, I find it challenging to navigate the emotional landscape of those around me, often absorbing and reliving their feelings, which can be difficult; however, as an artist, this sensitivity has been a lifelong companion and a potential catalyst for creativity, presenting a dual challenge. I am me, I am who I am, I can't change It's a trait that's been born in me.

I asked because I too am an empath/Highly sensitive person. It is exhilarating and exhausting. I do think this aspect of our personalities lends itself to creativity. I also have mental health challenges and the intensity of being empath can be a trigger. I wouldn't change it though. I feel like it is mostly a blessing to be able to feel things very deeply and intuit other people. Thanks for your sharing. Katie

I was sorry to hear about health issues, but I'm grateful to report that I'm in good health. That being said, I do have a tendency to procrastinate when it comes to nurturing my artistic side. As someone with a lifelong passion for art, I'm resolved to dedicate myself to my creative pursuits this year and take my skills to the next level.

A poem that gives the impression that this writing has be going on from time immemorable. There is a feel of timelessness to it and with a sense of calm and peace that reaches out from the past. Very well done

'I wrote before I knew I was me,' is an incredibly powerful line. It perfectly captures the feeling that creativity isn't just a hobby or a choice, but a fundamental state of being, like breathing. It feels like a true 'origin story' for the soul. Thank you for sharing this. 🕊️🙏

Thank you, that's one of the nicest compliments I've had about my writing. So, kind of you.
