LISTENING TO A TREE

Durdica Porobija

When a child puts his ear to a moss-covered branch,
The tree screams with joy within
At first it speaks only in silky silence
After a solemn pause it whispers a word to the child
That only the child and the tree recognize
It plays the hum of an internal organ
It gargles with streams and currents-strings
It wishes him the experience of a tree
Perseverance in the years that will bring storms
And deep roots in the child's Truth
Above all PEACE PEACE PEACE

  • Comment from author about the poem: I love trees because I often spent time in our family orchard during my childhood. I also love the forest, and a tree to me is a picture of a human being. My granddaughter has also developed love and respect for trees.
