Forced choice

sorenbarrett

I have two parents father and mother, I'll never have another, two countries of birth
Born with no voice as to which parents I had no choice, child of two different parts of earth
Asked which I love and which from me to shove, no child can make that choice
In childhood egence, to both I have allegiance, two tongues that have one voice
Although grown, both I own, though foster parents did carry me away
One of nature's creations a child of two nations, with both I wish to stay
Forced to choose all sides loose, unalienable rights not to be taken away
Countries of amity wed by humanity, are joined in a world family today

All this is very mouving and gentle poetry but the realities of our world are not based on emotions .
    In a world family I don't believe !

    • sorenbarrett

Thanks for the read Lorenz. Not yet maybe some day

if evryone loved each other I would no longer have any inspiration !

        • sorenbarrett

Poetic bliss kind of a bummer

        • David Wakeling

I get the feeling that Trump is behind all this. Dual citizenship should be something to be proud of not something to regret. No-one can be blamed for what parent they have.An interesting poem I like the rhyme and thoughtfulness.Well written

          • sorenbarrett

Whether he is or not his wife will have to deal with it. I do not hold it but have a permanent residence card instead. Thank you for your read David and support it is most valuable.

          • Doggerel Dave

This isn't an emotional thing at all, is it? You would by now have resolved the contributions offered to you in terms of genes and cultures by each parent, I suspect.
This then becomes a piece of bureaucratic bullshit which perhaps may limit your freedom of travel, or at least make it more difficult.

            • sorenbarrett

It becomes emotional Dave when it affects you personally. All my family are dual citizens and only I am not holding a permanent resident card. A daughter that has a grand child should the grandmother be limited by the term of a visa to visit the daughter and child or give up her home where she has lived for over fifty years. Should a child too young to choose be limited by the choice of parents where they wish to live in the future and should both parents be living in different countries should that child have to gain a three or six month visa to visit one or the other. Dual citizenship has been allowed since the formation of the country and is guaranteed under the Constitution of the US and many other countries. Why restrict it now.

              • Doggerel Dave

If that emotion becomes anger and motivates action then it has power. If it all bleeds out on a poetry page with again the use of 'we' and so on then..........................
I note you don't credit me with providing any sympathy; that could not be more untrue. I too was subjected to a bureaucratic anomaly which prevented my return from overseas to Australia for years. I have much empathy here, Soren.

I appreciate that Dave I'm sure you do due to the tone of many of your writes about human right issues and the plight of the downtrodden. That was never a doubt of mine. For now there is no more action needed than a letter to congressmen and senators. It is unconstitutional and would require an amendment to the constitution to be legal but then there are many enforcements that are illegal but still enacted and it falls on the one whose right is infringed to pay the cost of court and their time to fight it.

                  • Doggerel Dave

Go for it, mate. It will require much perseverance, energy and resolve to obtain any movement from the powers you are up against. But in the end, whatever the ultimate outcome, you should feel comfortable with yourself for the effort.

                  • Poetic Licence

This is sadly happening in many countries, pressurizing people to conform to other people's beliefs and values or be cast aside. Americans do not seem to understand that they are all descended from immigrant blood and I would say they they therefore all have dual nationality genes in them. Unless you are from a indigenous tribe you are not a true American, I hope people like yourself continue to fight against the attempt to eradicate peoples heritage, belief and values to conform to one persons belief, I think history shows this doesn't end well, when one person attempts to do that.

Thank you Tobani for the read and support. We live in a world that is constantly shrinking via instant communication and travel and yet we continue to put up borders. I understand the desire not to flood job markets, crowd desirable areas but prejudice along with competition fuel the fires of nationalism. I would like to think that people not governments are all the same and that those in power should work for the good of the people not their own pockets.

                      • Poetic Licence

                        Absolutely agree with that

                        Well written. Enjoyable read.

Wow I did not know about the exclusive citizenship act… it feels like we’re going backwards! We should be citizens of earth!

                          Sigh nonetheless, great poem Soren

                          • Tristan Robert Lange

Soren, I appreciate the honesty in this… the refusal to let others force a choice between things that both belong to you. Life rarely fits into the neat divisions people demand. The poem honors that complexity with real grace. The ending carries that spirit well. “are joined in a world family today.” Thoughtful work, my friend. 🌹🖤🙏🕯️🐦‍⬛

Thank you Tristan for the read and comment my friend. The irony in this situation is that the bill is sponsored by a naturalized Colombian senator and under the a President whose wife holds dual citizenship.

Totally! The irony is certainly not missed. It almost punches you in the face, if not pokes you in the eye! LOL!

                              • Allie561

Wonderful poem Soren. Why must we be forced to choose and push away a part of ourselves? Not such a “free” country anymore. Choose our culture or where we live. If you choose either you face hate from both sides, a very strong conflict many of us are dealing with.

                                • sorenbarrett

Thank you so much for the read and comment it is most appreciated along with your support. Yes freedom is just a matter of degree. Freer than most but not what most people think.

                                  • Allie561

You’re very welcome Soren, I’m always happy to. Freedom always comes with a price to pay.

Fine words soren showing the troubles we see to have in this world, we were all born on the same world and should be seen as true members of that world and not be segregated.
