Defining Still

Neville

Defining Still

as patient and still

as the dark

shadows each cast

beneath the arc,

span and the reach

of outspread

sun bitterns wings ..

so perfectly

poised for the kill

and far more

patient, than any

would be

rooftop assassins

perched

up high, on some

invisible ledge

behind an invisible

screen ..

each posed with

their back to the sun

on a double

time killing spree day ..

Dark shadows lay in this write. It is ominous and foreboding. Is it personal or sociopolitical reflecting the time of day we are in. I shudder. Nicely written my friend

Well written. The poem delves into the natural world, focusing on the sunbittern’s poised stillness as it prepares to hunt. It reflects on the predatory instinct both in animals and humans, suggesting a commentary on the nature of waiting, observation, and the act of killing, whether it be literal or metaphorical.

Neville, the image of the sun bittern poised with wings spread for the kill really stands out. It captures that eerie balance between calm and violence in nature. Everything feels suspended in that moment of patience…right up to β€œa double / time killing spree day ..” Strong imagery here. πŸŒΉπŸ–€πŸ™πŸ•―οΈπŸ¦β€β¬›

Neville, many words have been expended over time here and elsewhere in attempts to differentiate between animals and humans. There you have the essence...

(Not yer average bird of prey, BTW, when I looked.)

This has the calm, lethal patience of something wild and untouchable.
The tension builds slowly, like watching shadows wait for their moment.
