Abundance

Katie B.

I believe God holds Blue Jays

In the sky suspended from his grace

That weeping is rains trickling face

And that tenderness billows at night

That light is fragments of extraordinary bliss

And that mercy opens doors to forgiveness

I know laughter to be contagious and auspicious

That love holds as a child clings at night

Compassion lives in the human embrace

I find joy to be boundless and timeless

In all these I’m flushed with abundance

Beautiful words and thoughts in this poem. Gracefully arranged they make for a most peaceful feeling and one of reassurance that calms. A fave

Katie, there’s a beautiful thread of gratitude running through this…seeing grace in birds in the sky, mercy in forgiveness, and love in human embrace. The image of Blue Jays suspended by grace opens the poem with a sense of wonder that carries all the way through. It leaves the reader with that same feeling of quiet abundance. Well done, my friend. 🌹🖤🙏🕯️🐦‍⬛

Thanks so much for your kind words! I like this one too. Where have you been published? Do you have a book? What are your thoughts on me pursuing a book. I've tried about 15 magazines and journals and haven't been published. Do I not write in a manner people want to read?

I am right where you are, my friend…trying and not succeeding much so far. But honestly, I think that’s the story of most published authors. Persistence really is the key.

Right now I have a collection submitted to a chapbook competition. 🤞🤣 I do have one poem published in an anthology of authors local to the Poconos, PA, where I currently live. I was lucky enough to find the Pocono Liars Club, which was modeled, with permission, after a club started in Philadelphia by Jonathan Maberry. They’re a group that supports local authors in the area, and I happen to be one of two poets in the group.

They decided to put together an anthology to support their work. They are truly nonprofit, and the funds go toward hosting things like writer’s workshops, conferences, and other events, which up to now have mostly come out of members’ pockets. So it’s a great cause, and I was fortunate enough to be accepted into the anthology after the editors reviewed submissions and made their selections.

As for self-publishing, I’ve been looking into that as well. I would probably start with smaller collections, chapbook length, but it definitely seems like a worthwhile option. Since I don’t have a full-length book published yet, I can still submit to chapbook competitions like the one Rattle runs. Those are usually reserved for unpublished authors, and many chapbooks don’t count as a full-length publication, though some contests treat them differently.

Of course it requires a lot more self-promotion and work since there’s no publishing house behind it, but I think it’s a completely valid path.
