Doggerel Dave

I’ve just acquired a Panama hat;

My antique walking stick goes with that.

Upright Gentleman About Town, cool cat.

Ah stuff it – me north and south puts paid to that…

Right from birth my culture infiltrated its way into my delicate system.  It was thus a rhymer I became.

‘North and South' = mouth.

I get this Dave I got a lot of it from me old courting days around the East End of the smoke .. actually I got a lot of things (before then) but that's another story .. Oh' did you know (not in a Michael Cain accent) that it can take just a few weeks or up to about a year to make a Panama hat by hand .. I saw them being made in Panama last year .. Not a lotta people know that .. (Michael Cain accent in ya head optional) .. I bet you wear it well .. R Stewart .. Neville 😎👍

So that woz the East End when smoke was there aplenty – not the fairground it is today (and good luck to ’em). Didn’t manage to visit Ecuador, but saw the next best on YouTube (what cannot one see on YouTube?) Managed to find a genuine job just near the lower end of the authentic price range, right size, which will service my need nicely. Neatly made too.

Yep .. the Big Smoke 😎👍

          Good write D.

This made me smile, mate. I read that in a Cockney accent. Nicely done.

          • Doggerel Dave

Glad you found something in it, Tom.

Clever wording Dave and yes I have heard that term used before of north and south, I always wondered why not east and west but I guess that is because tradition assumes that we are always headed east into the rising sun or west into the setting sun, but what do I know. A short write my friend but one that sets the mind to wonder. Do cloths make the man with that hat and cane. Enjoyed it and its rhyming "At's"

Thanks Soren. Nah - it's just (cockney) rhyming slang, eg:
There are two basic forms, one where the whole initial phrase is incorporated (whistle and flute = suit) or only part of initial phrase (Butcher's = butcher's hook = look) If interested, there are plenty of web sites which give listings half (or more) of which I’ve never encountered.

              • sorenbarrett

You are most welcome Dave and thank you for the head's up on the slang. I have a hard time with cockney even though my ancestors came from that neck of the woods and Ireland many generations ago. Have a great day my friend

                • Doggerel Dave

Will try after some kip, Soren. lol

I am assuming you're overdressed but your cockney charm wins anyway.

                  • Doggerel Dave

I suppose that is one way of viewing me...

                    Thanks for showing up.

Dave, this has such a fun swagger to it…that polished image built up line by line, then undone with “north and south” in a way that’s both sharp and funny. It’s playful, but grounded in something real. Great piece, my friend. 🌹🖤🙏🕯️🐦‍⬛

Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins'. Worst Cockney Accent of all time.

I could not agree more......... Though are you saying anything in particular about my modest offering here?

                    • Goldfinch60

Good fun write Dave, I came from Kent and now live in the midlands but some still think that I have a cockney accent. Would you adam and eve it.

                      • Doggerel Dave

Pure prejudice, I'd say, Andy - and a revelatory surprise; I always pictured you as a bit of a toff...

                        • Goldfinch60

Not a toff in any way Dave, brought up by hardworking parents who taught me to lead a good respectful life, worked for my forty seven years and one month, never out of work so I earned my pension.
                          Thank s for the understanding.

                          Andy

No more class war, then. I'll ease up on yer from now on 😂

Never mind - I almost dragged an autobiography out of you anyway.....

Oh' now I see, you meant that kind of at ..

Communication can be quite a difficult undertaking at times.. I mostly never quite know quite where I'm at...

                            • Thomas W Case

Brilliant work. Love the wry attitude.

no comments - as you have yourself described what you are - a cool cat, and gentleman about town...and the cane goes well with it - i think the hat competes the picture very well - but don't let all these stop you from commenting frankly - let your 'north and south' have complete freedom...
                              bless you

                              • Doggerel Dave

I shall certainly continue to do the best I can - particularly if it assures me of your best attention.
Take it easy and take care.

                                • NafisaSB

                                  I will - thank you
                                  Have a great day...take care...
