Take a Number

Katie B.

We can’t escape pain, take a number

Your time will come

Like a rod that hits you from behind

Surrendering breath

Willing her way in

Wringing you out like a damp dish cloth

Gnashing her teeth on fibrous bone

Torched, left to fry

Pain sears indelibly

She can leave as quickly as she came

Others, she lingers

Take of her, don’t let pain

Be lost on you

Go forward, give away the good

That remains

Honor renewal, share the hope you thought you’d lost

Pain like everything else in this universe has its positives and negatives. The negatives we know well but the positives are seldom touched on. Nicely done

Katie, I connected deeply with the shift near the end…that idea that suffering can either hollow us completely or become something that deepens compassion and hope for others. That feels very lived-in and real to me. Beautifully done, my friend. πŸŒΉπŸ–€πŸ™πŸ•―οΈπŸ¦β€β¬›

Indeed.Pain is there for all to share.I enjoyed this poem. The great Australian Actress Ruth Cracknell once fell on stage. They asked her if she was in pain. Pain she said "I've been in pain everyday of my life." Its kind of like a companion in many ways.Wonderful poem.Made me think
