An ordinary farm day

NafisaSB

The sun shines brightly in the sky

The cows, munching cud, lazily lie

Flies hover near them, until they swish their tails

But their attempts to drive them off, on the whole, fails.

The dogs sit contentedly, growling now and then

Whenever they perceive a cat or a hen

The goats bleat slowly in their lazy old way

Watching the chicks run around the hay.

A few tramps stop by the gate, meaning to beg alms

They are alert for a chance to steal, about which they have no qualms

Loud barking startles them, where are the dogs

They turn around in fear, but only see some hogs.

Slowly the tramps move off, tired of a long wait

Cursing almost everyone, and above all their fate

Once more calmness settles in, its an ordinary farm day

Everybody feels contented, in this sultry day in May.

Cursing themselves most of all! Oh well, who knows how they`ve been damaged in their lifetimes?
The poem was a nice, bucolic read. At least their was no farmer shouting "Get off my land!" in it!

i truly wonder if we will find such serenity anywhere these days - this is an ode to the olden days, and was written some years back..

      • Mutley Ravishes

I feel that the only true serenity can be found in our own hearts. I too, yearn for the ancient ways. I appreciate modern technology, but If I could go to Middle Earth right now, I would. So, I`m looking inside for that "golden dimension."!

        • NafisaSB

yes, the serenity lies deep within us, and sometimes i too yearn for the 'good old days'

The rural calm, vividly evoked through visual and auditory imagery, is briefly interrupted by tension before returning to peace. This pattern invites the reader to associate the farm scene with human life, which is likewise subject to intrusions in the form of threats, dangers, and conflicts. Although such disturbances may jeopardize peace and tranquility, they cannot ultimately destroy them, for true peace comes from withinโ€”from belonging to a settled community and accepting the rhythms of everyday existence.

The outsiders and intruders in the poem can be seen as symbols of the disruptive forces that enter our lives. Their discontent and dissatisfaction are the very forces that drive their intrusion. In contrast to the contentment of the farm's inhabitants, the tramps are restless, alienated, and resentful, highlighting the difference between inner fulfillment and perpetual dissatisfaction.

Such a wonderful indepth analysis of the poem - really appreciate your thoughtful and farsighted comments..True peace definitely comes from the inner self - if we are contented and do not allow outside elements to affect our wellbeing, then we are truly blessed
thank you for the wonderful feedback!!!

A lazy setting gives a nice appeal to this poem of farm life and its slower pace. It feels very much at home and far from the world buzz. Nicely composed in rhyme it moves slowly in its pace replicating the image. Well done

that is how it was in the good old days - now with mechanization taking over, tis seems to be a pipe dream, which it would be great to have...

Safina, this really made me smile. You capture the easy rhythm of farm life so well...animals resting, small disturbances coming and going, and the day carrying on regardless. What I enjoyed most is the sense of contentment that settles over the entire piece. It feels like a warm snapshot of an ordinary day made memorable through observation. Wonderful work, my friend. ๐ŸŒน๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ๐Ÿฆโ€โฌ›

that is how it was in the good old days in farmhouses around the world - now I wonder if it can be brought back with industrialisation and mechanization taking over...but - yes - it's the ideal life I would like to experience...

Well, what a charming vista you've delightfully offered up in a trice. Beautifully rendered with excellent imagery, a haunting poignancy, and such a note of realism I nearly swoon in the indulgence. Thank you so very much for sharing.
