on forgetting

"on forgetting"

We have always misplaced things—
small truths,
the way a path once bent toward water,
the sound a friend used
when the day was still unbroken.

Ignorant of neglect.
Flowing in a slow drift
that follows every life,
the way dust floats
even when no one moves.

People try to keep what they can:
a mark on a wall,
a line carved into wood,
a gesture repeated
until it feels steady again.

But forgetting is older
than any attempt to resist it.
It arrives without force,
changes nothing at once,
and then everything.

Still, we look for what was set down,
not expecting it to return whole,
only hoping to recognise
something of its shape
when it comes back to us
in whatever form it chooses.

Thanks friend. It’s come time for life’s reflections to begin flowing more. Much appreciated πŸ™πŸ»πŸ•ŠοΈ

        always welcome

Entropy of the mind a constant force it erodes and changes perceptions for the better or worse. Those canyons worn channel water of thought cutting deeper gorges below cliffs of hard sediment rock of prejudice layers of past perceptions. Particles of truth carried and buried under the silt of time. of A wonderful piece Cryptic that speaks to the distortion that happens in the mind. Loved it

Thanks Soren. Sometimes I hope that I’d go before the mind goes. πŸ™πŸ»πŸ•ŠοΈ

You are most welcome Cryptic I too wished this but the mind does not go all at once and I think the process started long ago for me.

Thanks for understanding. It just seems useless to be physically present but not always in mind. Most appreciated. πŸ™πŸ•ŠοΈ

What a beautifully contemplative piece, Rik! The restraint gives its sorrow tremendous depth...and its acceptance feels tender without becoming reassuring. I have felt that ache of reaching inward and finding only traces where something complete once lived. This truly moved me, my friend! πŸŒΉπŸ–€πŸ™πŸ•―οΈπŸ¦β€β¬›

To be able to move another human being, now there is an ability to strive toward. Thank you, dear friend. πŸ™πŸ•ŠοΈ

Forgetting/remembering; the whole process(s) is problematic from the get-go. I have always had trouble here – one of many deficits I’ve contended with for a lifetime. Agreed, it hasn’t got better, but I can’t remember if it has got worse…

                • arqios

As long as it's not getting worst, that's fine by me! Thanks DD πŸ™πŸ•ŠοΈ

Beautifully put, Arqios! Your poem is so forgettable, no, I mean unforgettable. Nice song you wrote there!

Sometimes a Word or Name just pops in your head and you think: 'Wheres that come from'.
Then you remember it was something from your Childhood. Or someone.
                      Good Write.
