Fickle Mirrors
Dear lord
how I have grown
to despise,
deny and to cry shy
of mirrors
and the increasing
remoteness
they leave me here
to wrestle with
throughout what is
essentially
left of our dotage ..
Yet not so
very long ago I did
love each
and every single
one of them
and the attention
they would
then dare to lavish
upon us both ..
Oh’ how fickle they
have become
and how fleeting
are those
simple things we all
live in fear
of losing we call
both youth and love ..

That you in that mirror? It was still me, the last time I looked. lol.
.................................. Maybe
I know precisely what you mean, Neville, but there's not much I feel the need to add right now...π’
Cheers Dave .. Neville π
There is a power of identification in this poem Neville. Like the painting in Dorian Gray our image changes in mirrors and we do not like the reflection often hiding from it. Nicely written my friend.
How cool is that .. thanks loads my friend .. Neville
Always most welcome my friend

Tarantella! Flamenco!
What a beautifully vulnerable piece, Neville! The movement from youthful affection into uneasy estrangement captures one of agingβs quieter cruelties. I feel more of that distance myself these days...though I remain convinced the bathroom lighting is partly responsible! Wonderful work, my friend. πΉπ€ππ―οΈπ¦ββ¬

Come, come, come. My own parents never seemed at a lack, my late father extolling my late mother as vivacious to the last. You're surely teasing, our peers are not so likely to linger on the street corners as hitherto? And my brother who lately kicked the bucket told me mirrors lie. So there. Then what? Beautifully rendered with excellent imagery and a killer poignancy. Thank you for sharing.
Please accept my belated condolences on each of your losses .. they are sincerely meant & likewise sent .. Neville π»
A fact of life one has to accept whether you like it or not π€π
Now aint that the truth .. π»π
Yes π for sure
Mirrors are the only thing in the world that always tell the truth. As much as we wish there was a way to make them lie, they will not. Why can't we put a fiver in some slot somewhere and they show us as we were on our wedding day. But sadly, no.... They insist on truth. They're like a loudmouth Mother-in-Law, you wish they would just leave. So now, I just ignore them, passive resistance, or fear of facing truth. I consider them as non-humans, because they never listen when I point out their errors of judgement. I tell them that what they are showing is incorrect and that I know better. They won't take the criticism and change so I mostly ignore them. Somehow though, I feel they will have the last laugh. I thought about calling for a total ban on the damn things, but then I realized I would never be able to tie my tie without one. So let's face it.....Or not. They win.
You have summed up the whole dilemma in your astutely aware poem. I guess we could say you have held mirrors up to a mirror. Loved it - Phil A
I am absolutely made up & mighty honoured Phil bless you my friend .. Neville
