Exposed Roots

soheil khodaparasti

Exposed Roots

They broke me,
not enough
to make me fall,
but enough
to make my roots
break through the soil.

Every hand that let me go
carried away
a handful of my own soil;
and every wound it left

left a root
exposed to the cold air.

Now
I am a tree
with exposed roots;
my entire past
is laid bare
before passersby.

I wish someone understood:
these twisted lines
are more than roots;
they are the imprints of fingers
left by those
who once
pulled me
from my own soil.

And yet,
still,
my trunk,
with all its wounds,
beneath the weight of the wind,
still stands
facing the sky.

Perhaps a wound
is the very crack
through which

the root
finds its way
deeper
into the soil.

And I,
with all my exposed roots,
still
do not say no
to the passing wind;

but not just any hand
can reach
my branches

any longer.

This poem has deeper roots that are not fully exposed. There is that feeling of exposure when one is partially uprooted but as it says in the beginning it did not fall so some principle roots remain probably the tap root that source of life. Nicely written my friend.
