The Sea of Worry
Counselors say:
To free yourself from
fear, tension, and distress,
take a cold shower;
as though anxiety
were something
that could be washed away.
Exercise;
as though the pounding of your heart
could be sweated
out of your body.
Socialize;
as though worry
could leave your chest
with a few words.
Paint;
as though restlessness
could be left behind
on a canvas.
Listen to music;
as though turmoil
could be carried away
on waves of sound.
Unaware that
we
are floating
in a sea of worry.
Anxiety
is not on the skin
to be washed away,
nor in the muscles
to be sweated out,
nor in words
to be spoken
and finished with.
Anxiety
has taken root
somewhere deeper
than skin, muscle, and words,
in the silent layers
of the mind;
and sometimes,
the harder
we struggle
to escape it,
the deeper
we sink
into this very sea.

A true write that although distraction can serve momentarily when it ends the problem remains. Deal with the problem is the most logical but not always the easiest. A most interesting write Soheil. For years I have worked with people with anxiety and it is often one of the most difficult problems to heal.
Thank you very much for your thoughtful and insightful comment. I deeply appreciate your perspective, especially given your years of experience working with people with anxiety. Thank you again for sharing your wisdom and experience. It means a great deal to me.
Soheil you are always most welcome
There’s a damn strong central metaphor here, and the repeated “as though” effectively builds the speaker’s frustration with easy prescriptions for something that lives much deeper. The final turn is the keeper—the harder we thrash against the sea, the deeper we sink, which gives the poem a bleak but honest understanding of worry.
Thank you—I really appreciate that. I am glad the central metaphor and the repeated “as though” came through, especially because that tension between easy prescriptions and deeper worry was something I wanted to explore. And yes, the final turn was meant to capture that paradox of struggling harder sometimes only pulling us further under. I am grateful you picked up on it.
