I gave you all my best, and yet I still failed you. God, why?
I poured the marrow from my bones,
And offered up my untamed soul,
I built a cathedral from river stones
And prayed that the pieces would make you whole.
I gave you the sunrise, the breath in my chest,
The map of my heart and the keys to my room.
I swore that my best was a permanent test
Against the cold shadows, the gathering gloom.
And yet—at the end, when the silence fell down,
When the ash of my striving blew back in my face—
I stood like a beggar who’d lost up his crown,
Disgraced and dismantled, erased from your grace.
Oh, God, I stood naked and stripped in the glare,
With nothing left hidden, no strength left untried.
I climbed every mountain of worry and care,
And bled every drop of my love out inside.
If the offering pleased not, why ask for the yield?
If the vessel was cracked, why entrust me the spring?
I lie here defeated on blood-watered field,
A broken-winged bird that gave you everything.
You asked for my all, and I held nothing back—
I emptied my heaven to fill up your sky.
So why must I drown in this desolate lack?
Was my best not enough?
God in heaven, why?

With tears in my eyes, I read this poem because it describes who I am. I've given my all, and yet I still feel lacking. I, too, ask, “God in heaven, why?”
This is a beautifully written poem. Be blessed!
Thank you, my friend.
A poetic plea for an answer as to why there is strife, pain and struggle. If there were a God he might say read my fairytale of Job. I was betting that you were stronger than Satan thought and I always win my bets. A good read well worded and with good rhyme and flow. It tells a tough story but one that can end well if one is tough enough to stick with it. Well done
Thank you, my friend
Hi Friendship, God sure can be cruel sometimes.
Nicely written - Syd 🍄
My friend, this is a psalm of lament in its rawest form. The prayer remains unresolved because the wound remains unresolved...faith survives here as the courage to bring devastation before God and demand that the silence answer. Powerful work, Friendship. A fave. I can relate to this deeply.🌹🖤🙏🕯️🐦⬛
A deeply moving expression of giving everything and still feeling that it was not enough. Sometimes the most painful question is not what more I could have done but “Why wasn’t my best enough?” Powerful and beautifully written.
