when down i lie,
i wish to be a firefly
caught in a jar by
a child with wide eyes—
a face of surprise—
to again see joy arise,
before my last light dies.

Fanciful it at the same time is an allegory for spreading light and knowledge or truth. Well done my friend
Well written. Your poem revolves around the metaphor of a firefly, representing life and vitality, and the emotions tied to the end of life. The imagery of a child experiencing joy reflects the innocence and purity associated with youth.
Good write T. I too wish to be a firefly on a wall, but not in Popeye's room. Why not? WCAT!! lol.
Natures magic to the childs eyes
You live you die you eat a pie but you'll never be a firefly.
The innocence of youth, if only you could bottle it.
There’s a damn tender sadness in this, with the firefly becoming a little vessel for one last glimpse of innocent joy before the light goes out. The child’s “wide eyes” and “face of surprise” keep the ending from becoming purely bleak—they give that final flicker a reason to matter.
What? Are you trying to make me cry? I have a soft spot for children...and fireflies.
Very touching. I know because I was touched.
Very, very lovely. How on earth did I miss this pretty number? Beautifully rendered with excellent imagery and a haunting yet charming poignancy. Thank you for sharing.
