Poetry is as Poetry Does

Michael A. McGuire

I've written lots of poems.
If I think really hard, I can
remember writing my first poem.

My teacher said that nonsense
won't take you anywhere.
Must be hard being a teacher.

Sometimes I wrote poems
just to hear my own voice.

Sometimes I'd even write
poems in my sleep.

Now I've written happy poems
and sad poems.

Poems about nature and
poems about technology.

There's Love poems and
lonely poems.

Poems about greed and
goodness.

Long poems and short poems;
spiritual poems about good
and poems about evil.

Poems that bring a tear to
your eye and poems that make
you laugh out loud.

Poems that make you think and
poems that will make you want
to drink.

Poems that...that...that...

That's about it...

...and all I have to say
about that.

Lovely. I too wrote a poem in English class in the seventh grade for an assignment. My interest in poetry when I was failed by the teacher who said that I must have stollen it from a book and wanted me to prove I hadn't. Guilty until proven innocent just like the rest of the world.

Thanks - thought I'd play around with a little Forrest Gump themed verse to shake it up.

        You are very welcome Michael

While I've a tendancy to be sillier thanks to more or less no sleep since Monday night, I still shall insist you're hilarious herein. Thank you for sharing.

Would you like a chocolate? I ate one. ~ Sorry - couldn't resist.

Yes, I'd love a chocolate. I've been dabbling in this genre since grade school only my teacher/s didn't quash my efforts. Sorry yours did.

Michael, this is clever, warm, and wonderfully self-aware. What begins with a teacherโ€™s dismissal becomes a lifetime of creative possibility...then the Forrest Gump turn brings it home perfectly. Excellent work, my friend! โœ๏ธ๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ™
