I was always told
I couldn't do anything right
I wish I could have found a way
To have disappeared into the night
The beatings would come whenever
He'd been drinking at the bar
I'm surprised that what he hit me with
Had never left a scar
Looking back I partially understand
It was all about discipline
I know if I hadn't had it
I wouldn't be where I am
When he passed away
I never shed one tear
It wasn't out of meanness
It was more out of fear
For I believed if he heard me crying
His thundering hand would fall from the sky
Once again I'd feel the pain
That's why I didn't cry
My tears for him never fell
For that I have no regrets
I think back now and then
It's the pain not him I can't forget
I vowed when I had children
I'd never do what he had done
I never forgot that vow
And never raised a hand to hit my son

A poetic statement of not following an example that was bad. Well said
