Different Gods

Jabberwocky

You're the mother of my children.
I watched you give birth to them,
I placed them in your arms.
I heard you whisper
"I hope she'll like me"
With a gentle earnestness
That escaped the deepest part of your soul.

You will never be more beautiful to anyone than to me.

I saw the sneer on your face as you left us,
Reframing love as abuse
And an unreasonable imposition.
To justify your cruelties.

Oh the savage sea you roiled in me!
Fatherhood my only anchor,
but deep and heavy.

I remembered it in the long night
as I lay in my shipwrecked bed,
with a child clinging to either side.
Their tiny bodies warm,
Five and two.
So young to be washed up on my lonely shore.
But safe.

You will never be more ugly to anyone.

I invested everything in you.

You worshiped at the alter of self,
the congregations many.

I worshiped at the alter of family.

We chose our gods.
I weighed what I was sacrificing to mine,
I don't think you ever did.

Shakespeare anticipated you:

"sweetest things turn sourest by their deeds"*

You are the festered lily in my life,
and in your own.

Strong words fill this piece, it has sadness and pain and a powerful statement about a broken relationship where values differ. Nicely written it evokes emotion from the reader. Well done.

Wow, my friend...this is devastating. Love becomes betrayal, but fatherhood keeps you standing when everything else has collapsed. The contrast between who she was and who she became cuts incredibly deep. Powerful write. 🌹🖤🙏🕯️🐦‍⬛

Thanks as always Tristan. I often feel you must be reading my mail, you always seem to get what I'm aiming for. I think that's more s comment on your perception than my skill. Have a great weekend friend. I'm off to visit my mum with the kids. Lucky to still have her.
          Cheers

Very powerful words Gary showing how love can be split and sadness can dwell but the love of the children stays strong.

            Thank you Andy.
It's all about the kids for me, and jeez they're getting big!

Jeez, what did you feed him! My youngest is just 13 so he has a way to go.
I'll make sure he has plenty of protein and keep you posted! 😛
