Monsters are still alive

Monsters in the dark, myths so called,
Can we break the ways so called?
Fangs and claws they use,
To rip your soul apart,
Feeding on the freakin' blood,
Craving human flesh,
But were they really true?
Or were the myths half the truth?

'Cause monsters are still alive,
Living among us.
You can't even recognize them,
Such is their disguise.

Every day I ask myself,
Standing in front of the mirror.
I stare at my very self—
"Where are those monsters?"

Are they even real?
Or was it a lie too?

Someone told me the truth:
Demons live in us too.
Humanity died, myths buried.

But the monsters are still alive,
Walking in sunlight,
Loving the moon,
Fearless of the sun above.

Not as the monsters of tales,
But as very humans.

  • Comment from author about the poem: When I wrote this poem, I kept wondering whether the monsters from myths were ever completely fictional. Over time, I realized that the most frightening monsters do not hide in the dark—they walk among us, disguised as ordinary people. This poem is my reflection on human nature, the darkness people can carry within them, and the unsettling thought that sometimes the monsters we fear are not creatures at all.

    I remember as a child my father saying the only monsters one needs to fear are human ones and so I have felt all my life. Well written

        Sadly these days those very monsters not only walk amongst us but have power over our lives! Scary, but we are safe if we stand together!
