The Thing Beneath My Bed
At 3 AM, I heard a knock,
Three slow taps beneath my floor.
I held my breath, I checked the clock.
Then heard three more.
I whispered, “Who is there?”
Something whispered back, “You.”
I froze beneath the blanket
As the bedroom door crept through.
My window slammed. The lights went dead.
A cold hand touched my face.
I felt two fingers trace my eyes.
Then something took my place.
I ran toward the bedroom door,
But stopped when I looked down.
My feet were standing on the floor.
My shadow wasn't around.
Then from beneath my bed came laughter,
Soft and wet and low.
And a voice said:
“You shouldn't have looked beneath me.”

There is dark humor and meaning in this. One should never look beneath them for under them is only oneself and all shadows disappear
I really like that interpretation. The idea that the darkness beneath us is ultimately a reflection of ourselves makes the ending even more unsettling. The disappearing shadows add another layer too, it feels like confronting a part of ourselves we normally can’t see.
By the way, I’m a commission-based artist, and I also create custom poetry and artwork inspired by characters, stories, and fictional worlds. If you’re ever interested, I’d love to show you my work!
You are most welcome and thank you for letting me know but have a good friend that is a first rate artist and a cousin that was the dean of the school of fine art and Brigham Young University and has painted all over Europe and is internationally known. I choose to post almost universally without art, although I have posted a few poems with my own drawings in charcoal
That’s really wonderful! It sounds like you have some incredibly talented artists in your circle, and having a cousin who was a dean of a school of fine art and internationally recognized must be quite special. Your charcoal drawings alongside your poems sound fascinating as well, I’d genuinely love to see them sometime.
I completely understand your choice to keep your posts mostly without art. I really appreciate you sharing that with me, and thank you for taking the time to respond!
Heyyyyy Lilly! I finally found you! 😭 I’ve been trying to find you everywhere, and I’m so glad I finally did!
I just wanted to thank you for the amazing work you’ve done, turning my stories into visuals, transforming my horror stories into audiobooks, and bringing my children’s stories to life through visuals. I absolutely LOVE your work! ❤️
I’d love to work with you on more projects. Would you be available to create more for me? I’m more than happy to pay you for your work, of course!
I’m really excited to work with you again!
HAHAHAHA! Thank you, Jessica!
And why not contact me through my Gmail: [email protected]
I’d love to stay in touch and hear from you!
I’ll definitely keep in touch. Looking forward to talking with you again!
When something similar happened to me, it was fifty percent my dream, but the source was the folks in the flat below playing hide and seek. How they could hide in accommodation the size of a cereal packet, I have no idea. Which is possibly why some how they extended their activities up here. Will never know for sure – my life is full of such mysteries.
By the way, will I be reading more poetry from you and Jessica in the near future??
Absolutely! Jessica has worked with me before, and she often reaches out when she wants to turn her imagination and stories into visuals, artwork, and audiobooks. We actually lost touch because she lost access to her accounts and couldn’t find my contact information.
Now that we’ve finally reconnected, I’m hoping there will be more poetry, artwork, and creative projects from us in the near future!
