his dreams

Jon Nakapalau

were the manifested
                                                                      nightmares
                                                                                    of everyone else
but it made                                          no difference to him
because desire had promised
no accountability
to any                                                                                other power
in the name of any god
that sleep of reason
which is the lullaby tyrants hear
as they are tucked in bed
after nursing
on the black milk of war.
