a table reserved within my heart

Kay C

and after we hung up the phone

and i cried the tears i needed to cry

and sent you the text no one should ever have to send to the one they think would hold their heart forever

i looked down at my trembling hands and finally accepted a simple, life changing truth:

your future forever will not be mine

and i wont be yours

but the small space that’s reserved in my heart for you will forever have your name on its table

not as an open ended invitation for you to sit and enjoy one day whenever you decide to grow

but as a monument and reminder

that i will never give so much of myself away and keep so little ever again.
