Love's Lost (lament)

Cheeky Missy

sonnet attempt # IV

IV

When he found himself 'most falling in love....
And that my mother's so disapproving;
And that my conscience also bothered me,
He found these obstacles t'o'erpass too much
And cast me cruel and bittersweetly off.
My pleas, vain wish, my earnest entreaties
To God that he not thus in this succeed,
But burn with remembrance, nor we be lost,
I could not but beg, nor trust Him thus to hear;
For 'twas contrary to His written Word.....
And yet for all my hopes and dreams, my tears
I oft anon shed and fear I'm UNheard......
For love I plead....holy matrimony.....
Thou dost e'er reject.....all is mockery.

  • Comment from author about the poem: So I was reading/studying old sonnets as usual, and bemoaning my woes, then suddenly feeling overwhelmed, taking up my pen, found I might compose perhaps one of those lofty pieces, and all in the familiar theme of love......okay, someone who knows better can find all the flaws and reject it outright for success in the endeavour.......

    Hee hee 🙂 Today I decided to read one of your older poems! 😀 And I'm actually quite surprised! You were very good when you started out! This poem is so nice! 🙂

      Actually it looks really poor now to me! Thanks for your generous good opinion on it. I wonder now that I thought it was so good. Hahaha, now I can see easily it is pretty poor.

      I was sufficiently intrigued to trawl back over almost exactly 14, YES fourteen years of your posts to get an idea of where you might be coming from .. and get this .. firstly, I was gobsmacked (that means delightfully surprised in Brit speak) to discover you must have been one of the earliest poets to grace these great halls of near residence .. and secondly, I was not in the slightest bit disappointed .. and thirdly, it is a great personal honour to be the very first to assign a red shaped heart icon to any of your work here ..
