Did you ever think a cockroach
Could've caused a stir in church?
I suppose it did not really;
Just for me the trouble lurked.
Dunno why we chose the front row,
But after that the "fun" began...
First we fought over the hymnal---
"It's THIS song?" "No, no! it's THAT!"
(With the bigwigs right in front onstage
And congregation all behind,
I know I should've had more sense...
Then just why'd I lose my mind?)
I was glad when we were seated,
For I felt we'd made a scene;
But I little guessed what lay ahead,
Especially for me.
I thought it seemed the youth pastor
(Sitting facing both of us)
Might have noticed our confusion,
Though the singing drowned our fuss.
I determined I'd do better,
Nor anything give him to watch;
When a cockroach came a saunt'ring....
Just a going on a walk.
I 'most gasped in horror and loathing,
For I know my eyes got wide;
He was come right by the organ,
When he seemed to change his mind....
It was then I lost my reason....
I forgot all things but him:
And I'd kill him if 'twas needful...
My dress shoe would do the trick!
He was coming straight on for me;
I was readying for the strike....
When I don't know why it hit me----
That my shoe was rising high!
("I am sitting in the front row,
And my shoe is IN THE AIR?!
What in the world have I been thinking?
Oh I HOPE nobody stares!")
Well, the youth pastor...he saw me....
For his eyes met mine just then.....
As for the unwitting cockroach?----
He yet changed his course again.

its funny, I like this one ; )
Great! Hahaha, I am glad you enjoyed it.
Our paths haven't crossed before as far as I can tell. In a general rummage through your back catalogue I happened upon this, which has special relevance to me as there's a 'roach or two.......or three at my place right now, the product of warm humid conditions. Off to buy some baits.
A fun write - thanks.
You're very welcome, Sir. Thank you dropping in on this one.
I had a similar relationship with a rain beetle .. no kiddin .. enjoyed & muchly .. your post that is, the beetle had to go before I drowned .. 🪲🐧👍
Haha, by this long time since the occurrence over 30 years ago, it's more a painful reminder of how completely absorbed I am prone to be.
Excellent poem capturing a uniquely hilarious and I am sure embarrassing moment! Those darned critters! LOL! “The creeping things that creepeth”as the good ol’ KJV says, right? Lol!!! 😂
Haha, thank you very much!
🤣 You're welcome!
