My Island

Josh Taylor

Sometimes I wish I had my own ‘Utopian’ land,

Where all the rules were made by my hand.

On this island there would be no use for law,

Ultimate human freedom would be at its core.

The state would not demand any sort of tax,

Such an idea would be considered as extinct as the fax.

Having to earn a living would be a thing of the past,

Citizens of my state would not remember when they worked last.

Crime and punishment would be confined to history classes,

Unlimited free-will will be welcomed by the masses.

Immigrants would be welcome and need not worry about rejection,

This country would be a masterpiece in perfection.

That is for about a week, until things start to breakdown,

And the ensuing crises become a risk to my crown.

Heaven becomes Hell as the populous starts getting bored,

Those complaining about health, safety and the economy become an angry horde.

Civil war arrives on dreamland and many lives are lost,

Now a nightmare, the idea has come at such a cost.

There is no way of ending such a revolt,

As leader, I must take responsibility as the man at fault.

As a result, I am deposed as Dictator,

And you take over as the ‘new’ revolutionary Master and Creator.

On second thoughts, maybe things are just fine as they are,

I never intended things to go this far.

Maybe life as we know it will just have to do,

History shows not every idea works out how it was intended to.

I quite enjoyed this piece! Made me chuckle and I am still smiling! I love how you wrote it all in couplets...that made the thoughts under consideration so effective. It really was quite pleasant to read it all! Your end-rhyming is so nice and your syllables per line are fairly consistent...altogether....I quite liked it!
