Tagoresque? Christian Mystic's Love

Cheeky Missy

Ye lovers of Tagore Behold!
Ye Christian Mystics too!
I wrote this now some time ago
And now I do it rue!

It was a lie though I knew not;
I worshipped God thereby.
At least that's what I thought. But God,
His Word proves this a lie.

I wish to be in love again
With Thou Who loves me so;
Yet for a feeling do I wait?
Instead of to Thee go?

Remember those few moments sweet
When THOU wast all I wished?
"I never want to turn from Thee......
E'er let me live like this.....

When all I've known or ever wished,
Eclipses totally
In all Thyself....Thou Lord alone
Exceeds all ecstasy!"

The moments frequenter I lust
For days and months and weeks;
For that which ne'er doth satisfy,
Forbearing Thee to seek,

Believing all the ancient lies,
Perversely blind and deaf.
And mis'rable in all of these,
Of joy and hope bereft.

An' Thou dost turn me back to Thee
Because Thou lovest so.
Now nevermore I'd turn from Thee,
Nor e'ermore from Thee roam....

But 'bide as now in ecstasy
My heart all overflown
In Thee, O Lord, my Life and Hope,
Who satiates my soul!

Yet back I've fallen oft since then
And farther ev'ry time;
From Thee and any ecstasy
While seeking me and mine.

Restore my soul to former bliss,
When Thou wast all in all,
Take me back to Thee from this,
Where Thou art I'd belong.

  • Comment from author about the poem: I was raised in the church. In fact my parents were leaders. Charimatic, Southern-style Baptist, and finally Plymouth Brethren......I learned to love "the Lord" so ecstatically mystic. Of course, I had to put it into poetry. Then I came to PH. I was introduced to Nobel Prize-winning RN Tagore; and his wonderfully sweet Gitanjali. I discovered we two must worship the same god. Huh. I who so vehemently argued against all who say we all worship the same god by different names, now made such a discovery. But he did not worship the God of the Bible. Hmmm. Then neither did I??? Well, the God of the Bible does not send people into bliss or ecstasy. Hence the intro quatrains repudiating this piece. (Oh, and by the way, I now agree that all DO worship the same god.....excepting those who worship the only true God of the Bible.)
