What a poet is

jvl narasimha rao

A poet is an ordinary human being

But he always thinks of others’ well being

He often grapples with the problem of rhyming

And aims to post his poem with great timing

A poet usually writes with great passion

And he is a  person of great emotion

He may have certain personal blemishes

But she tries to write with beautiful flourishes

A poet promptly responds to what happens around

Her knowledge of the world is very sound

She lives with the quite common man

But thinks like a superman and supra human

A poet has great social responsibility

He tries to present the reality

He may suffer from vanity

But he is never devoid of humanity

A beautiful, lofty, idealistic depiction of the poet, which if 'twere true, would make poetry more worthwhile, and more desirable. Unfortunately, I beg to differ IF this is endeavoring to describe all modern poets...for so many of us, seem merely intent on spewing forth whatever we feel most impassioned about, resulting in not a few vile pieces, self-centred despairing pieces and a general reflection of the rotten condition of modern man....But then again, perhaps that makes your point that "the poet" writes a reflection of his fellows. I personally deplore the decay of all art, as visible in music, literature, painting/sculpting from the enlightened renaissance to the twentieth century to the present day....which seems to me to aptly depict the corruption and loss of almost all beauty and good apparently abounding everywhere, which if we would aspire to write good poetry, we must seriously struggle to overcome in our lines, putting forth a return to such loftiness while all around us screams hellishly of demise.
Thanks for this presentation of the ideal poet,...a call, as it were, to return to virtue if we would truly be poets.

    I really like your poem!!!
It makes me wonder, what is a poet but what we see in our worlds reflected on our desires.
Sometimes we are brave enough to let others see inside and that makes the poet known but also brave.
    Best
